Sweetwater 7th and 8th grade ‘B’ combined team hosts Wall, 4:30 p.m.
Sweetwater 7th and 8th grade ‘A’ teams will be hosting Wall at 5:45 and 7 p.m., respectively.
Sweetwater freshman and JV teams at Wall at 5 and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
Roscoe junior high and JV teams are open.
Highland junior high and JV teams at Sands at 5:30 and 7 p.m., respectively.
Blackwell junior high at Trent, 6 p.m. (JV is open)
FRIDAY, SEPT. 20
Football
Sweetwater varsity vs. Wall (homecoming), 7:30 p.m.
Roscoe varsity is open.
Highland varsity will host Sands, 7:30 p.m.

TSTC West Texas nursing students hold TB clinic for employees of Abilene State Supported Living Center

September 17, 2013

On Wednesday, Texas State Technical College West Texas Vocational Nursing students will hold a TB clinic at the Abilene State Supported Living Center. The TSTC students will be performing TB tests for more than 600 employees at the center. Coming up in October, TSTC has been invited back to the center to provide employee flu shots.

Oak Creek is 22.30 percent full and Lake Sweetwater is 22.10 percent full.

Public gives input during city meeting

September 17, 2013

A concern was expressed about the establishment of gas meters in residential areas during the public input portion of September's city commission meeting.
Glenn Wortham shared that on McCaulley Street, between 12th and 13th streets, Atmos Energy were placing the meters on the curbs. He also showed pictures to the commission of the newly-erected meters.
This same type of situation took place in the past, but Wortham was informed that the company would discontinue the practice.

Local pastor gives program on Malawi mission at Lions Club

On Sept. 10, longtime Lion member Alton Pyburn was responsible for the program. His first thought turned to his own church pastor, Rev. Brian Brownlow who serves First United Methodist Church in Sweetwater.

Local TxDOT employee retires

September 17, 2013

Donnie Cornutt, a 21-year veteran of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), retired from the department’s Mitchell County maintenance office on August 31. Cornutt began his TxDOT career in 1992 in the Nolan County maintenance section. At the time of his retirement, he served as Mitchell County’s sign technician. Cornutt was a Champion resident for almost 40 years. He and his wife, Jarmila just moved to Ovalo after both of their retirements. The couple has three children and seven grandchildren.

City moves forward with Hunter Well Field development

Approval was given to continue with the funding opportunity presented by Texas Water Development Board toward the development of the Hunter Well Field and pipeline during the September meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission.
The board recently determined that no grants were available to the city but offered a mainstream loan for the well field development, which is more favorable than market certificates of obligation. City staff make the recommendation to move forward with the loan for the well field, which currently has three wells on chart.

Eyeglasses being collected at RPMH

The local Lions Club and Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital are currently having a drive and collecting old and unused eyeglasses for the Lions Club International Recycle For Sight program.
Those wishing to donate may bring the eye glasses to the admissions desk at RPMH this week. Glasses will also be collected at the Wednesday lunch and learn program that will feature eye health.
