Many showed their support for local volunteer fire departments this past weekend at the first Help the Heroes Buzzi Bash, hosted by Buzzi Unicem, USA that took place at Newman Park.
This event benefitted the five volunteer fire departments in Nolan County including Maryneal, Nolan, Blackwell, Roscoe and Lake Sweetwater with all of the proceeds divided equally among the departments. There were many activities for members of the community to participate in, including a cook-off.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will begin a major project to reconstruct 1.3 miles of Lamar Street (US Highway 70-Business) in Sweetwater this week.
The project will completely rehabilitate Lamar Street, which is one of the communityâs major streets, from I-20 to Avenue B by rebuilding the road base, laying new asphalt and building concrete intersections to improve drainage. The project also includes new sidewalks, curbs, gutters, retaining walls and upgraded signals.
The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at the SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) East Ridge Elementary library (backside), located on the corner of Hoyt and Mark Alston.
The school is owned and operated by Sweetwater ISD. Vicki Mayberry is the principal.
Children and their education are the top priority. Sweetwater ISD boasts 380 employees, and this year's theme is Sweetwater Strong.
Gladys Turner, age 96, of Sweetwater passed away Monday, Sept. 2, 2013 at Sweetwater Healthcare Center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013 at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Reverend Brian Brownlow officiating. Interment will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
William (Bill) Havner, Sr. went to be with his Lord and Savior on Aug. 31, 2013 after an eight year battle with COPD.
Bill loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He was born on April 19, 1949 in Winters, Texas to JW and Mildred Havner. He enjoyed buying and selling antiques and watching John Wayne movies.

Enrollment at Texas State Technical College West Texas has increased significantly this fall. As of August 27, 2013, there are 1,331* students enrolled at TSTC West Texas. In fall 2012 the college enrolled 810 students.
âThe increase in enrollment means that we are in a good position to help meet the workforce needs for the state of Texas,â said Gail Lawrence, TSTC West Texas President. âTSTC West Texas is focused on training these students with the skills necessary to find a quality career.â
Team Chip Tae Kwon Do students demonstrated their fighting skills during a performance at the Holy Spirit Parish Festival that took place on Sunday. A large crowd gathered to see the students in action.
Brookshireâs Grocery Company celebrated their 85th anniversary by giving cake to customers in each of their stores, including in Sweetwater.

Sweetwater firefighters raised money this past weekend in Sweetwater to help people with neuromuscular disease.
The cityâs fire department held its annual Fill the Boot drive to benefit Jerryâs Kids and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Firefighters collected donations at the corner of Broadway and Elm Street on Friday, as well as at the Interstate 20, Georgia intersection.
Those who want to donate also can stop in at the local fire station to make a contribution.
