The Housing Authority of the City of Sweetwater, Texas presented Mr. Don McDorman with a service plaque commemorating 42 years of service, from 1971-2013, at its monthly Board meeting Wednesday, August 21, 2013, following his resignation.

(Irving, TX) - Every fall, more than 55 million children across the United States head back to school.  With 13 percent of those children typically walking or biking to their classes, AAA Texas warns drivers to be especially vigilant for pedestrians before and after school hours.  The afternoon hours are particularly dangerous – over the last decade, more than one-fourth of child pedestrian fatalities occurred between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Most Texas schools start up again on August 26, so AAA Texas recommends the following tips to drivers:

TSTC and PEC join forces to develop well-trained oil and gas workforce

(Sweetwater) - Texas State Technical College West Texas (TSTC) and Petroleum Education Council Safety Management (PEC) have joined forces to create a pipeline of well-trained, credentialed workers for the Oil & Gas Industry in Texas. TSTC will teach PEC’s “Oil Field Preparation System” (OFPS) which is a job readiness program that prepares job seekers for the oil and gas industry. This safety-based job readiness program prepares job seekers for work in the industry on land and offshore.

Nolan County Soil and Water Conservation District Board Supports Kids On the Land

Once again the Nolan County Soil and Water Conservation District has made a donation to the Kids On the Land (KOL) program and fully supports the mission of KOL and the concept of bringing agricultural education to life while out on the land. Mandi Ligon, District Conservationist in the Sweetwater office, has also provided support and leadership for the program at the 69 Ranch.

OVALO: Jack W. Hancock, 98, passed away Wednesday August 22, 2013 at his ranch in Ovalo. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at the First Baptist Church, Tuscola, with burial to follow in the Tuscola Cemetery. Pastor Dewayne Bush officiating, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, August 24, 2013 at the funeral home.

Mustangs score five times in final tuneup

The spread offense was a big change for Sweetwater’s football program when it was installed by newly-hired head coach Shane Mobley a year ago.
But it seems the Mustang players are finally adapting — even having fun with it.
After managing just one score in its opening scrimmage at Wichita Falls Hir-schi, Sweetwater’s offense scored on its first two plays against San Angelo Lake View in Thursday’s final scrimmage at the Bowl. And both scores came in spec-tacular fashion.

CHILDRESS — Back-to-school means back-to-traffic, and as students return to the classroom this fall, the Texas Department of Transportation calls on drivers to “Drive Friendly. Drive Safe.” to reduce crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists.

Sweetwater Strong Red Run!

Sweetwater ISD held a Red Run on Monday morning to help start the school year off strong. Faculty and staff members, as well as students and community members were invited to the 8 a.m. run.
All who attended showed their school spirit by wearing red and white. Dye stations were set up along the route to throw red powder at the runners, covering them head to toe by the end of the race.
