SATURDAY, AUG. 24
After relatively-easy wins in their first two games against Sterling City, the, Sweetwater volleyball team was almost pushed to the limit here Tuesday.
The visiting Lady Eagles won the third game 25-19, then ran off three consecu-tive points to take a 24-21 lead in Game 4.
But in a remarkable turn-around, Sweetwater scored the next five points to close out Sterling City and win the match at Mustang Gym.
The Lady Mustangs (3-7) ended with a flourish by getting a service ace from Kensi Chowning, one of two freshmen on a very young team that has just two returning lettermen from 2012.
Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s volleyball team competed at the Bev Ball Classic held this past weekend in Abilene.

Highland ISD will be hosting their annual Meet the Teacher night and Big Blue Preview on Thursday, August 22nd.Â There will be several activities during the evening including a brisket sandwich meal, meet-and-greet with teachers, and an introduction of the football players and cross-country runners.Â
From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the Highland PTO will be serving brisket sandwich meals in the cafeteria, $6 per plate for adults and $4 per plate for children 5th grade and younger.Â They will also have several door prizes.Â
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Serviceâ€™s Big Country Beef Conference has been set for Aug. 22. The biennial conference starts with registration at 8 a.m. in the Big Country Hall next to the Extension offices located on the grounds of the Taylor County Expo Center. This yearâ€™s event will focus on the current state of the industry, stocker/yearling management and heifer development.
The conference is the largest and most comprehensive educational beef program in the Big Country. We typically draw speakers and participants from across Texas.
The New Teachers' Luncheon was held this past Friday at the seminar room located in the Center at the TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas campus in Sweetwater. The event was hosted by the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
Gil Cherry, the president of the Chamber Board, expressed his pride in the annual luncheon. As the future of the nation is based upon the education of children, he applauded the sacrifices, selflessness and courage of the incoming teachers.
A special-called meeting of the Nolan County Commissioners was held on Monday so that discussion could be held on the GMP (guaranteed maximum price) for county jail and sheriff's office projects.
At last week's meeting, 100% of the construction documents were presented with lengthy discussion taking place to determine items to be altered in a way which would lower the GMP without compromising the quality of the building. The meeting on the 12th concluded with the total cost standing $964,000 over, and the contractor and architect were asked to return with a final plan to bring costs down.
"Super Chaos" was held at 4th and Elm Church of Christ on Wednesday night, August 8, 2012 on the church campus. Families of children attending the weekly summer children's program at the church, "Chaos", were invited to take part in the special event that included a bounce house, a meal and games for everyone.
"Chaos" started in June and has been held each Wednesday night this summer at 4th and Elm Church of Christ for elementary students, offering them a time of Bible stories, puppets, crafts and snacks. The program will wrap up on August 29.
Sweetwaterâ€™s West Texas Stampede softball team recently won first place at an 8-under tournament in Snyder.
Despite being one player short of a full team, Sweetwater played eight games at the one-day event and beat Abileneâ€™s â€˜Da Heatâ€™ twice for the title after losing to them in the semifinals.
