Weekend weather outlook for Sweetwater

Today we'll have a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1pm. Expect partly sunny skies, with a high near 90 with winds from the south at 5 to 10 mph, becoming east in the afternoon.
The rain chances will decrease to 20% tonight before 1 a.m.; otherwise we'll have partly cloudy skies with a low around 68. Winds will be from the east at 5 to 10 mph.
This weekend will be pleasant, with highs in the low 90s and lows in the low 70s. We won't have any rain chances, but winds will range from 5 to 10 mph from the south-southeast.

Kornpop to be in Sweetwater

Kornpop the Klown (shown) is coming to Sweetwater. Kornpop is a professional clown that has travelled all over the world using his talents to share the gospel with others.
He uses comedy, illusions and balloons to present God’s message and will keep the audience entertained regardless of age. Kornpop will be at the Church of God of Prophecy, 2000 Chester Street this Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.

Completion date set on SNAP building construction

Sweetwater City Manager Eddie Brown gave his monthly report during Tuesday's meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission.
An update was offered on the progress of the SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program) building, as work on drywall, paint, and the ceiling is currently being completed. The city is looking at a completion date of August 31, in which Brown said the progress is on target for that timing.

SMS cheerleaders attend camp

Sweetwater Middle School sent two cheer squads to Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) cheer camp in July 2013. Along with their traditional eight member eighth grade squad, SMS has formed a seven member cheerleading squad for seventh grade, for the first time in SMS history. This expansion means SMS will have two different squads at sporting events for their respective grades, and will combine efforts for all pep rallies this season.

Contracts approved at county meeting

August 15, 2013

Two contracts were considered for approval during Monday’s meeting of the Nolan County Commissioners.
A contract was approved with Lexis Nexis for access to their legal research data for the County Attorney’s office. The commissioners were presented with the information prior to the meeting by county attorney Lisa Peterson, who stated that the access is the most cost-effective route among three options.

James Melvin Veal

August 15, 2013

James Melvin Veal, 72, of Sweetwater, was born on Nov. 29, 1940, in Fort Worth to Melvin and Mary Veal. James met with his maker on Aug. 14, 2013 at 10 p.m. at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. James was a cook for many of the local restaurants, including Stars Drive-In, Rosa’s Cafe and Jack’s Steakhouse. He served his country while being in the United States Navy. James enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, dancing, cooking and most of all spending time with his family. James married his wife Brenda Hale on July 23, 1991. They were married for 22 years before his departure.

Marshall Neilan Pior

Marshall Neilan Pior, age 89, of Sweetwater, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 at Fourth and Elm Church of Christ with Mike Crowley officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at the funeral home.

Hornets want more than postseason trip this time

Two years after a winless season on the field, Black-well’s Hornets are eyeing a second straight postseason appearance heading into the 2013 season.
Clint Lowry immediately turned the Hornets into a contender when he took over the program last year, guiding the Hornets to a runnerup finish in District 8, Division II Six-Man and their first playoff trip in four years before losing 49-22 to Loraine in bi-district.

110 TSTC West Texas graduates walk stage in Friday’s ceremony

TSTC West Texas will graduate 110 students on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Abilene Civic Center.  
The Digital Arts program is graduating its very first cohort of artists, which includes Jarrad Hamilton who opened his first show at the Center for Contemporary Arts during Artwalk last week. Kathryn Black, an outstanding Welding Technology graduate is a non-traditional student and has climbed to the top of her class. She has ambitions of working as an underwater welder.
