On July 11 each year a certain convenience store chain celebrates 7-Eleven Day. It is also known to customers as Free Slurpee Day. In whatâ€™s become an annual event, 7-Eleven stores give away one free Slurpee per customer on July 11. Sweetwater student Hannah Poone is keeping herself busy this summer with a Kool-Aid and lemonade stand in town. She will be a fifth grader at Sweetwater Intermediate School this coming school year.
As part of President Obama's all-of-the-above energy strategy that develops every available source of American energy,Â the Department of Energy and Vestas Wind Systems joined with Sandia National Laboratories and Texas Tech University to break ground on a new state-of-the-art wind turbine test facility in Lubbock. TheÂ Scaled Wind Farm Technology (SWiFT)Â facility is the first public facility of its kind in the world to use multiple wind turbines to measure how wind turbine wakes interact with one another in a wind farm.
The afternoon session of Monday's County Commissioners meeting was held in the third floor conference room and focused on issues with the remediation of the courthouse facade as well as issues pertaining to the proposed Nolan County Jail and Sheriff's Offices.
Many children have been enjoying the summer reading program at the County-City Library with reading and activities every Wednesday, as well as keeping up with their own reading logs. Laura "Sue" Michael, age 73, of Midland (former resident of Sweetwater), passed away on Monday, July 8, 2013 in Midland.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 13, 2013 at noon at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Juanelle Jordan officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Mary Lou (Boyett) Baucom, age 88, of Sweetwater, passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 14,2013 at Garden of Memories with Pastor Juanelle Jordan officiating. Burial will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at the funeral home.
Mary Lou was born on July 27, 1924 in Sweetwater to Ira H. and Ida L. (Barry) Boyett. She worked for Ludlumâ€™s for many years before retiring.

Two people were transported on Tuesday afternoon after another 18-wheeler wreck at the US 84 bridge that is currently being repaired after being hit last year by an 18-wheeler. The road had seen several wrecks in the past few months. The Sweetwater Fire Department received the initial call for emergency services at 3 p.m. One person was transported by ambulance to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital and another person was flown to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
