The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 53 calls for service, issued four citations and made one arrest on May 1, 2013.
The SPD received 35, 911 calls.
Calls for service:
• Burglary of a habitation — 1000 block of Hailey.
• Theft — 1800 block of W. Broadway.
Arrested by SPD:
• Pamela Cooper, 41 — Public intoxication.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, no civil papers served and made two arrests on May 1, 2013.
Arrested by NCSO:
• Byron Oneal Blueford, 25, of Sweetwater — Warrant/failure to appear.
Being the coach of the first Sweetwater High School softball team to win a play-off game may make him the answer to a trivia question some day.
However, Tony Heredia is doing his best to put the Lady Mustangs’ 11-1 win over Pecos in the past and get his team ready to face a tough Pampa team in the Region I-3A area playoffs at 6 p.m. today at Lubbock’s Coronado High School.
“We really haven’t even talked about it,†he said. “We’re proud of the fact we won a bi-district championship, but now we’re ready for the next challenge.â€
The first playoff trip for Sweetwater High School’s baseball squad since 2004 is lengthy as the team goes to Crane High School to play Fabens in a best-of-3 bi-district series. Game 1 starts at 5 p.m. today, with Game 2 at 2 p.m. Saturday. Game 3, if necessary, gets started 30 minutes after the end of the second game.
It was a long road just to get here. After narrowly missing the playoffs a year ago, Sweetwater (15-13) was the district co-champion this season in 4-3A, where a single game separated the district’s top four teams.
Looks like we're in for a warm-up today, with a high near 65 and sunny skies. Winds will be from the west-northwest around 10 mph.
Tonight, expect mostly clear skies and a low around 43, with south-southwestern winds at 5 to 10 mph.
This weekend will continue to bring in warm temperatures, with highs in the mid-70s and lows ranging from the upper 40s and low 50s. Winds, however, will continue to remain from the north.

Lulu's Super Mercado in Sweetwater is helping to paint the town purple this week with their building décor and specials going on in the store.
Any $5 purchase gets customers a free purple nine ounce drink for coffee, water or soft drinks. The store is also giving away purple ribbons this week and every 100th customer will receive a door prize.
Customers can also make a donation to the American Cancer Society in the store and have their name put on a purple heart to be displayed in the store window.

The Fire Marshal was in town Monday to inspect the remains of yet another fire, this one in a small wooded area just south of the former nursing home on Cypress and between it and Peppy’s on Main Street.
City employee Eric Acosta was driving on Main Street Sunday about 11 p.m. and happened to notice the blaze. He and another city employee were able to put it out.
The fire appears to have been set. It is the third case of suspected arson to occur in a one block area. The other two are at the McBurnett house at 210 Cypress and the Treviño home at 211 Cypress.
Members of the Roscoe Fire Department received a page about a structure fire in Roscoe on Wednesday night at about 10:30 p.m., according to Roscoe Fire Chief Gary Armstrong. The Sweetwater Fire Department also responded to the fire.
The structure was on south FM 608, about a half of a mile outside of the Roscoe city limits. When fire fighters arrived at the scene, the structure was fully involved.
The owner of the home is currently in a retirement home and the house was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
During the recent Nolan County Forward Planning committee meeting at the Sweetwater Country Club, the topic of public safety was presented by Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda.
The meeting allowed for different entities within the county to come together to learn about the potential impact and consequences of the Cline Shale oil development.
Chief Frieda's report was based mostly on his recent conversation with a police chief from North Dakota, as the northern town has also been affected by the Bakken shale development.

Four more Nolan County athletes have been added to the list of state track qualifiers by the University Interscholastic League.
In Class 3A, Nick Nemir of Sweetwater was announced Wednesday as the ninth, or wild card, qualifier in the boys 300-meter hurdles.
Also, three athletes were added in Class 1A, Division II — Matthew Lowry (boys high jump) and Mason Magness (boys pole vault) of Blackwell and Jesus Leanos (boys 3,200-meter run) of Roscoe. The state meet is set for May 10-11 in Austin.
