Alyssa Harwell was recently named the 2012-2013 Teacher of the Year at J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center. She has been a teacher for the past two years, with last year being her first year to teach Head Start at Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District).
Harwell earned her degree in Early Childhood Education from McMurry University. Additionally, she is a member of the TCTA (Texas Classroom Teachers Association).
Ydalia G. Alcala, age 59, of Sweetwater, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at her residence.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 15, 2013 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel recited by Lupe Medellin.
Holy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Okonkwo officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
LaVelle Edwards Terry, 89, passed away Friday, July 12, 2013, in Garland after an extended illness. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2013 in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sweetwater, under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory Street, Abilene.
Mrs. Terry was born in Fisher County on Jan. 14, 1924. She was one of six girls, a twin, born to Altha (Freeman) and Harvey Edwards. She married Valton Terry in Roby in 1939.
Graveside services for David Benjamin Shifflett, 60, of Sweetwater, will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, July 15, 2013 at Sweetwater Cemetery. Rev. Duane Oden will officiate and interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation was held Sunday, July 14, from 5-7 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
Shifflett died Friday, July 12, 2013 at Sweetwater Healthcare Center. He was born Nov. 21, 1952, in Sweetwater. David attended Faith Harvest Church regularly.
Billy Sol Jones, 48, passed away Friday, July 12, 2013. A memorial service will be held in his honor at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at The Sweetwater J.C. Barn, 307 West 4th Street.
Billy was born on Feb. 10, 1965, in Sweetwater, to parents Guy Dwight and Sandra Bentle Jones. He met and married Mary Costello on Sept. 2, 1988. He enjoyed driving old backroads taking pictures and camping in the mountains. He loved life, politics and a good debate.

Our world is rapidly changing with the prostitution of the innocent in so many countries.
There are still a few summer sports camps left for local students to attend before the new school year begins.
A Mustang Golf Camp will be held July 16-18 at Sweetwater Country Club for ages 6 and up.
Sessions are from 9-11 a.m. each day. The cost of the camp will be $60 per child, with family discounts available.

A Mustang Football Camp will be held July 22-25 at Mustang Bowl from 7:30-10:30 a.m. daily for students entering grades 3-9.
The newly formed "Cline Shale Consortium" had its organizational meeting in San Angelo. The mission statement and committee structure was discussed. The Consortium will be contracting with University of Texas San Antonio to provide an economic impact study for the region. Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda and Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED) Executive Director Ken Becker represented Sweetwater on the committee (shown). Representatives from Abilene, Colorado City, Snyder, Big Spring and all over the Cline Shale were also in attendance.
On Monday, July 15 and Wednesday, July 17, a six-hour Microsoft Excel Basic 2010 course will be held in the mornings at the Sweetwater campus of TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas.
The course is one of eight classes being taught this summer in the Microsoft Office Short Courses in Room 210 of the Pevehouse Building, located at 300 Homer K. Taylor Drive. Each course costs $120.
