If you happened to be out and about downtown Sweetwater at about 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, you may have seen a whole lot of people on what appeared to be miniature motorcycles. What were those funny little bikes, and who were those people? The National Cushman Club of America members.
Those funny little bikes are actually Nebraska-made scooters that were built from 1936 to 1965. Sometimes dubbed "Baby Harleys," Cushman scooters reached their height in popularity during the late '50s and early '60s.
The Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) Board of Trustees met for their monthly meeting on Thursday, in which action was taken on two different insurances for the district.
For the first time in two years, bids were obtained on property and casualty insurance. The district is currently covered by TAPS (Texas Association of Public Schools) with blanket coverage, which means that in the instance coverage is needed, the insurance would cover the entire cost, even if the amount exceeds the appraised value.
Sweetwater Police Chief Brian Frieda invited a special guest at the Sweetwater Rotary Club meeting on Monday. Dr. Steve Lyons gave a presentation on hurricanes and how they impact our area and other inland areas.
Lowell Clovis Epps passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013, in Kerrville, Texas.
Clovis previously resided for many years in Sweetwater, Texas.Â
Sweetwaterâs 10-11 year-olds won their game in dra-matic fashion, but the other three local all-star teams all fell short in District 5 Little League All-Star tournament action on Tuesday.
Snyder led the 10-11 year-olds 1-0 entering the sixth inning, but Sweetwater won it 3-1 on a 3-run, walk-off homer by Rylen Moncada in their first of four District 5 pool play games. Sweetwa-ter plays again Thursday vs. Wylie at 8 p.m. at Wylie.
But Sweetwaterâs 9-10, 11-12 (Little League) and 13-14 (Junior League) all-star teams all went down to defeat Tuesday in their pool play games.
The Sweetwater High School baseball team was recently honored with a resolution by the Sweetwater ISD for making the playoffs. Several members of the team were present at last weekâs school board meeting and were presented individual resolutions.

Three entered pleas during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday.
David Wayne Suddock pleaded guilty to credit card or debit card abuse, a state jail felony. He was sentenced to 18 months confinement in the State Jail Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice with 206 days of credit towards his sentence for time already served in jail. He was also ordered to pay a $500 fine, $343 in court costs, $500 in attorney's fees, $82.98 in restitution to First Financial Bank of Sweetwater and $1,500 in restitution to Texas National Bank of Sweetwater.
