Inaugural meeting of WTEC well attended

The inaugural meeting of the West Texas Energy Consortium (WTEC) was held at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum on the campus of Howard College in Big Spring. The conference was opened by WTxEC Chairman Victor G. Carrillo, former Taylor County Judge and Commissioner of the Railroad Commission of Texas. 

Weather cancels tourneys

Several Sweetwater bas-ketball teams had to cancel scheduled games Thursday at local and area tourna-ments due to icy weather conditions. The same was true for the Highland and Roscoe boys and girls bas-ketball teams, who were to begin play at Highland’s an-nual Hilltop Classic.
Blackwell’s two varsity teams were the only ones from Nolan County to play as the weather took its toll around the state.
Also, the Graham-Shal-lowater quarterfinal playoff at Sweetwater’s Mustang Bowl was moved from 7 p.m. today to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Nolan County voters will have the opportunity to cast their votes on the early voting dates of February 18, 2014 thru February 28, 2014. They may also opt to vote in the primary election on March 4, 2014. Doug would sincerely appreciate your vote in this upcoming election.

Jeanne Palafox Wells to run for County Treasurer

Jeanne Palafox Wells is announcing her candidacy for Nolan County Treasurer.
Wells has served as County Treasurer since  March 1, 2013, when she was appointed by the Nolan County Commissioners to fill the rest of the unexpired term vacated by former county treasurer Gayle Biggerstaff.
Prior to her appointment, she worked in the County Auditor's office for six years as an Assistant Auditor. In this role, she audited various county offices, including the Treasurer's office.

Doug Sitter State Farm will host the Second Annual Cocoa with Santa from 5:30-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10. "Come and share in the holiday spirit with Doug Sitter State Farm on Lamar Street. Visit Santa, enjoy free cookies and cocoa and register to win prizes," said Doug Sitter. "We hope you will come and share the holiday spirit with us at Doug Sitter State Farm. You can take photos with Santa (bring your camera), enjoy free cookies and cocoa." 

School cancelled, residents encouraged to stay off roads

Many area schools have cancelled classes for Friday as roads began to ice over on Thursday, causing many wrecks in Nolan County and the surrounding areas.
School closings include Highland ISD, Blackwell CISD, Roscoe ISD and Sweetwater ISD. Roby CISD and Rotan ISD will begin classes at 10 a.m. but no buses will run.

Goodfellows distribution postponed

Sweetwater Goodfellows distribution has been postponed until Monday, Dec. 9, due to the bad weather.
Recipients need to come at there scheduled times Monday between 9-11 a.m. at The Lamar Street Baptist Church Gymnasium.
The Christmas party will be that afternoon at 3:45 p.m.

Today, there will be a 30% chance of freezing rain and sleet before noon. Expect cloudy and cold conditions, with a high near 24 and northern winds around 15 mph. Wind chill values will be between 3 and 12. Total daytime sleet accumulation of less than a half inch are possible.
Tonight will be cloudy, with a low around 13 and wind chill values between -1 and 7. Winds will be from the north-northeast at 10 to 15 mph.
