Parishioners represent local church at 2013 Texas Catholic Conference

Two local Catholic parishioners recently represented the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church at the 2013 Advocacy Day of the Texas Catholic Conference.
Aida Pantoja and Andrea Mendez took part in the event, which was held in Austin at the Texas State Capitol. They joined up with 50 other parishioners from Midland, Odessa, Walls, Abilene, San Angelo and Colorado City.
The local group was a small portion of the 1,500-plus people from other Texas dioceses. Twelve Texas bishops also took part in the Advocacy Day.

Magic show at the County-City Library

Did you catch the magic show at the County-City Library today? The library kicked of its Summer Reading Program with a magic show by Harlin Rhoades. Reporter makes media honor roll

Shown is Sweetwater ISD superintendent Terry Pittman (left) presenting Sweetwater Reporter managing editor Tatiana Rodriguez (center) and staff writer Belinda Serrano (right) with a certificate honoring their acceptance into the 2013 TASB (Texas Association of School Boards) Media Honor Roll during the May meeting of the SISD Board of Trustees.
Rodriguez and Serrano were recognized by the school district for their "fair, balanced reporting [and] providing valuable information to the community about public schools, their students, parents and patrons."

STEM camps underway

TSTC Sweetwater is hosting six summer camps this week, June 3-6, for students entering the fourth through seventh grades. All camps work closely with the STEM mind set of teaching science, technology, engineering and math.  
Basic Robotics (9 a.m. to noon)
Get started with NXT programming in the special LEGO NXT LabView environment. This includes:
• Concepts of structure: static force, torque, stress and strain;
• Basic building techniques;
• Upload/Download with the NXT module;
• Basic movement instructions;
• Concepts of programming: loops and switches;

Highland ISD students assist in tornado relief

USDA authorizes emergency grazing of CRP acres for Nolan County

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director, Dennis Cumbie announced that Nolan County was authorized for emergency grazing use of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres for fiscal year (FY) 2013.
Counties become eligible for CRP emergency grazing when they reach the D2 (severe drought) level on the U.S. Drought Monitor. As of May 30, 2013, 192 counties reached the D2 level and are eligible for CRP emergency grazing. It is possible that more counties will reach the D2 level eligibility requirement in coming weeks.

Sweetwater — Paul McDonald, 55, died Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at his home in Sweetwater.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 7, at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene, 7457 W. Lake Road, with Reverend Chris Fobbs officiating, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home of Merkel.
Paul was born Nov. 17, 1957, in Sweetwater to Morris Lee and Mary Jane (Lauw) McDonald. He was raised in Sweetwater and attended Faith Lutheran Church as a child. Paul was a U. S. army veteran. He was a welder who enjoyed making metal yard art.
