National WASP WWII Museum to host 9th WASP Homecoming

May 21, 2013

The Big Country has an abundance of history, much of which centers on ranching and railroad, but what some residents might not realize is the importance the area played in World War II. From 1942 to 1944, Avenger Field in Sweetwater was home to the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots), a select group of brave and patriotic women who were trained to fly and ferry military aircraft between Air Force bases throughout the United States. Their dedication to country and love for the open sky freed male pilots for combat duties.

Two rezoning requests recommended by the Planning & Zoning (P&Z) Commission were approved by the Sweetwater City Commission during their meeting last week. Prior to the approval, a public hearing was held for both requests.

Initially, the item was originally slated to be a K zone, but a request by the P&Z changed it to be an H district.

Hundreds remember Hailey Dunn

May 20, 2013

Hailey Darlene Dunn was a cheerleader, saxophonist, on the softball and basketball teams, a doer and a leader. But it all ended mysteriously in December 2010 when the 13-year-old West Texas girl disappeared.

"Hailey was a doer. She set an example for others to follow. She will always be one of us in spirit," Mark Merrell, the middle school principal said.
