SMS sets camps for basketball, volleyball

Summer camps at Sweet-water Middle School will be held in both girls basketball and volleyball this summer.
A girls basketball camp for girls currently in grades 2-7 has been set for June 3-6. Camp will be from 9-11:30 a.m. each day.
A girls volleyball camp has also been set for Aug. 5-8, with two sessions. The morning camp will be from 9-11:30 a.m. for girls entering grades 6-8, while the afternoon camp will be from 1-3:30 p.m. for girls entering grades 3-5.

SISD first in the nation to implement COPsync 911 — See videos below

A press conference was held on Tuesday morning at City Hall to announce a new school security system to be implemented within Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District).
A program already in use by local law enforcement known as COPsync, Inc. has offered the local school district the opportunity to implement the COPsync 911 system. Thus, Sweetwater ISD will become the first district in the nation to test and implement the security system.

TSTC Culinary department preparing lunch series

Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater will welcome the chefs and students from the TSTC Culinary Institute (Abilene) to their campus to prepare and serve a series of luncheons on the campus. The complete menus will not be posted, because the class for the week will determine what is served. These are not classes for the people attending, just for participants to attend and enjoy.

NCF awards 32 scholarships to local seniors

Due to excellent support, both in sponsors and in having 83 players participate in the annual Nolan County Foundation Golf Classic for Scholarships held April 20, at the Sweetwater Country Club, the Nolan County Foundation is announcing awards to 32 spring graduates from Blackwell High School, Highland High School, Roscoe High School and Sweetwater High School.
According to Homer Taylor, President/Executive Director of the NCF, this year's awardees will bring the total number of $1,000 scholarships awarded by the NCF since the Golf Classic began to 199 Nolan County spring graduates.

Ivy honored with resolution

The Board of Trustees of Sweetwater Independent School District recently signed a resolution honoring the 2012-2013 Sweetwater High School ATSSB All-State Band Qualifier, Crysten Ivy.
"Crysten Ivy has brought honor, pride and distinction to the city of Sweetwater and to the Sweetwater Independent School District during the 2012-2013 school year and has excelled in her performance by earning a seat in the ATSSB All State Band," stated the resolution.

Friends of the Library begin newborn project

The Friends of the Library have started a newborn project at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
They are giving new parents at the hospital a bag to take home with a new book, information about the library and other goodies. Marie Leach, Friends of the Library president and Barbara Keeney, secretary/treasurer, took 25 bags to the hospital and Misty Whoolery-Pratt, RN accepted the gift bags.

Game 3: 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2, if necessary (coin flip will be used to decide home team)
District finishes:
Sweetwater was No. 2 seed in District 4-3A de-spite being co-champion with Wylie; Andrews was the second-place team in District 2-3A.

Mustangs set new milestone with win

Sweetwater’s 8-6 victory over Pampa on Saturday at Lubbock Christian Univer-sity marked a new milestone for the baseball program, and matched another.
The win completed a two-game sweep for the Mustangs (19-14) in the teams’ best-of-3 area playoff, and advanced them to the regional quarterfinals for only the third time since the program was resumed back in 1988 following a 23-year absence.
This year’s team, however, is the first to ever win more than one playoff series.

Highland’s state run is top story of 2012-13 school year

When you make it to state for the first time in school history, it’s a big deal, even if the trip doesn’t end on a happy note. So while their dream of a state champion-ship was ended by Saltillo in the semifinals, it was still a very good year for the High-land girls basketball team.
Under the guidance of head coach Shea Baucom, the Lady Hornets went 31-5 in becoming the first Nolan County basketball team in four years to go to Austin.
Their journey was the top Nolan County sports story of the 2012-13 school year.
