NCBR offering four scholarships

The Nolan County Board of Realtors is offering to all interested Nolan County graduating seniors, of the Class of 2013, an opportunity to apply for the NCBR annual scholarship. If you are planning to continue your educational experience beyond high school, the NCBR is offering four $500 college scholarships to help you with expenses.

An estimated 110, 470 Texans are diagnosed with cancer each year and 37,984 will not survive.
Nolan County is joining over 5,200 other communities worldwide to host the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life, an event to celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who are no longer with us.
Relay For Life raises funds to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back.

Fire consumes Roscoe home

The Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department and Sweetwater Fire Department responded to an early morning house fire north of Roscoe on FM 608 on Wednesday morning.
The owner of the house was plowing in a field nearby when he noticed smoke coming from it. It was vacant at the time.
Before fire trucks arrived, the entire house was engulfed in flames and was a total loss.

TSTC offering disaster relief for West, Texas

Texas State Technical College West Texas is now collecting donations for those affected by the disaster in West, Texas. The donations will be delivered to the area on Friday, April 26. The public is encouraged to drop-off any donations at your local TSTC campus. Items needed include water, Gatorade, non-perishable food items, toiletries, baby wipes, baby items, blankets, towels, wash rags and clothing and shoes for men, women and children, etc.

Request for rail line crossing heard at county meeting

During the Nolan County Commissioners' meeting on Monday, discussion was held which stemmed from a request by a business in the oil/gas transportation industry to re-establish a rail line--which crosses County Road (CR) 108--and put it back into service.
Ken Tootle with MAALT made the presentation to the commissioners, in which he gave an overview of the company. The Fort-Worth based company has been in the business for around a decade, boasting 400 employees and several branches in Texas and Oklahoma, among others.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 42 calls for service, issued 1 citation and made 1 arrest on April 22, 2013.

The SPD received 15, 911 calls.

SW-Pecos playoff is being moved

April 24, 2013

At press time, the Class 3A softball playoff between Sweetwater and Pecos on Saturday was in the process of being moved to another location in Lubbock. If the change is made today, it will be announced on the Sweet-water Reporter web site.

These eight Highland girls will all be competing this Friday and Saturday at the Region II-A, Division II track meet at Angelo State University.
