POST — The good start needed for Sweetwater to stay with the No. 8-ranked girls team in Class 3A failed to materialize on Friday.
Instead, Lubbock Cooper jumped out to a 13-0 lead over the Lady Mustangs be-fore they could score, and the lead ballooned from there as the Lady Pirates beat Sweetwater, 74-37.
So the Lady Mustangs’ best season since 2005 — the last time they got to the playoffs — ends at 21-15.
Lubbock Cooper (30-4) will face Levelland — which upset No. 17 Wylie 42-37 in the nightcap of Friday’s playoff doubleheader — in the regional quarterfinals.
Highland was a double winner Friday, as the girls advanced to the Class 1A, Division II regional quarterfinals by beating Zephyr while the boys knocked off Hermleigh for the No. 2 playoff seed in District 13-A, Division II.
The girls, who earned a bye for winning the 13-A title, defeated Zephyr 48-29 in an area playoff at Clyde.
Highland (28-4) was led by Sierra Allen, who had 16 points, and Hannah Allen, who scored 11. With the win, the Lady Hornets will take on Water Valley in the regional quarterfinals this week. The time, date and location of the playoff was not known at press time.
