Regional finals action

There was plenty to celebrate during and after Highland’s 47-29 win over Garden City in the regional finals on Saturday at Abilene Christian University.

Expect mostly cloudy skies today, with a high only near 39. Winds will be high, as a west-northwestern wind will blow at 30 to 35 mph, increasing up to 35 to 40 mph. Gusts could top out at 55 mph.
Today, we also have a slight chance today for rain and snow, as precipitation chances stand at 20%.
Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low around 29. High winds will continue from the west-northwest at 30 to 40 mph, decreasing to 10 to 20 mph. However, gusts could still reach as high as 55 mph.

Lady Hornets sting Baird to advance to Region II-A final

ABILENE — State rankings obviously don’t scare the Highland girls basketball team.
After reaching the Region II-A, D-II semifinals with a 40-32 win over No. 16-ranked Water Valley, the Lady Hornets routed No. 18 Baird, 55-37, on Friday to move within one game of a first-ever trip to Austin. Highland (30-4) faced Garden City in the Region II-A, D-II finals Saturday with a berth in this week’s state tournament on the line.

Six Lady ‘Stangs earn 4-3A honors

Six Sweetwater girls basketball players have earned all-District 4-3A recognition for their outstanding play. All six are seniors.
Kendra Crosson, Kelsi Crosson and Suede Shirley all received first team all-district honors in 4-3A, and Shelby Cason was named to the second team. Elise Law-rence and Janell Walker earned all-district honora-ble mention.
Sweetwater was 21-15 this season and made the play-offs for the first time since the 2005 season. The 21 wins were also the highest total in eight years.

Young Guns are champs at Midland tournament

The Sweetwater Young Guns 11-and-under travel team won the championship at the Midland Winter Blast tournament, a Global Sports World Series Qualifier event which was played on Feb. 16-17 as part of Texas USSSA Baseball. JV gets pair of softball wins

Sweetwater High School’s junior varsity softball team recently won games against Winters and Colorado City by scores of 21-1 and 18-14, respectively.

Another big win

The Highland girls basketball team celebrated on Friday after their 55-37 victory over Baird that advanced the Lady Hornets to the Region II-A, D-II final against Garden City on Saturday. Friday’s win put Highland within one game of advancing to Austin to play in the state tournament later this week. A story on Friday’s game is on Page A6. A story on Saturday’s game will be in Monday’s paper.
