April 19th
Many in Sweetwater remember this day 27 years ago, as a tornado took residents by surprise that April morning. The tornado that occurred about 7:15 a.m. affected about one-sixth of the city's population according to figures gathered by city and civil defense officials at that time. No warning was given by sirens.
A Nolan County Grand Jury indicted 12 people this past week. Four of those indictments were sealed. The following cases were true-billed:
Gustavo Lopez Cervantes, 36, from Wichita Falls, was indicted for intoxicated manslaughter, a second degree felony. Court documents state that Cervantes operated a motor vehicle while intoxicated on Nov. 23, 2012.
Cervantes was driving a 2002 Dodge Ram eastbound in the westbound passing lane of IH-20. He was wearing a seat belt.
As Nolan, Fisher and the surrounding counties — who are part of the Cline Shale — continue to prepare for and take part in the development, their hope is to learn from another major oil play in Texas: the Eagleford Shale.
During the quarterly luncheon of the Cline Shale Alliance, recently held at the Sweetwater TSTC (Texas State Technical College) campus, a presentation was given by Dwain Rogers from the Sustainable Energy Research Institute at the University of Texas-San Antonio.
Richard Davison, age 63, of Sweetwater, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
His body was cremated. No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Sweetwater’s 10-5 victory at Monahans clinched the baseball team’s first playoff berth in nine years.
The Mustangs can reach another goal — winning a district championship — with a victory over Wylie on Saturday afternoon.
Regional berths will be sought today by 15 Sweet-water High School athletes — nine girls and six boys — who are competing in the area track meet at Pecos.
Their goals are to secure a top-four finish and advance to the Region I-3A meet set for April 26-27 in Lubbock.
The boys will be led by Nick Nemir, who has qualified to compete in four events for the Mustangs — the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, long jump and as a member of the 400-meter relay — and is trying for his third straight trip to the regional meet.
