James (Jaime) Vasquez

James (Jaime) Vasquez, age 55, of Sweetwater, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel, recited by Lupe Medellin.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, 2013 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home with Deacon Bill Butler officiating.
Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Loyd C. “Pops” Bowen

HAWLEY — Loyd C. “Pops” Bowen, of Hawley, Texas, left this world to join his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Nov. 14, 2013. He was born May 2, 1938, to Everette Nathan Bowen and Annie Pearl Jackson in Forrest Hill (Petty), Texas and was raised in McCaulley, Texas. He married Sandra “Sandy” Kleinpeter on April 26, 1980, in Arch, New Mexico.

Cowboys lasso Blackwell with dominating win

RANKIN — After winning the coin flip, Blackwell elected to receive the ball to start Thursday’s Six-Man Division II regional playoff against Grandfalls-Royalty.
Only one problem. The Hornets failed to recover the onside kickoff and the Cowboys scored to go ahead 6-0. And it got worse.
Grandfalls-Royalty — ranked No. 2 in Six-Man Division II — tried and recovered two more onside kickoffs, and scored after both of them, to take a 21-0 lead before the Hornets finally got possession.

Highland girls reach semis at Key City event

ABILENE — They may play in the state’s smallest classification, but on Thurs-day the Highland girls bas-ketball team — ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, Division II — proved that it could more than hold its own against much bigger schools at the Polk-Key City Classic.
Highland ran its record to 7-0 by beating Class 4A El Paso Irvin 42-21 and Class 5A Odessa Permian 55-51 on the first day of the tour-nament, which ends Satur-day. In doing so, the Lady Hornets reached today’s championship semifinals.

Sundown beats Windthorst

Sundown scored all the points it would need with touchdowns on its first two possessions Thursday, and used it as a springboard to a 28-7 win over Windthorst in the teams’ Region I-A area playoff at Sweetwater’s Mustang Bowl.

Regional art show this weekend

The West Texas Art Guild is having its annual Regional Art Show on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Civic Center in Colorado City.
Artwork can be brought and entered into the show from 8-10 a.m. Entry fee per piece is $10 for members and $15 for non-members.
Ribbons and prize money will be awarded by the judge, Dianna Lee Jones from San Angelo. Categories include: oil / acrylics, watercolor, dry media (pastel, pencil, etc.), photography, and 3-D (jewelry, sculpture, etc.).

TSTC welcomes new instructors

Texas State Technical College (TSTC) West Texas has hired two new instructors. James Beall has joined the Wind Energy Program and is teaching several subjects, including Electricity Principals and Wind Power Delivery. Beall received an Associates degree from TSTC in 2011, where he graduated with honors. "I'm looking forward to sharing my experiences and knowledge with my students," said Beall. "My goal is to get them properly trained and out into the work field." Beall lives in Sweetwater and has two children, Jason, 10 and Joseph, 9.

New businesses welcomed to Sweetwater

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday morning for Rolling Plains RV Park and Mr. C's Asphalt and Maintenance, located at 9909 South I-20 (west of the TA Travel Center) between exits 240 and 242. Pictured center are Jennifer Speed and Rose Carroll, owner of Rolling Plains RV Park and Sweetwater RV Park. Rose is from the Fort Worth and Mission, Texas areas. She is involved in a total of nine RV parks with her family. "We wanted to fix the park up to help fill the housing need when the oil boom really hits," said Rose about Rolling Plains RV Park.

SNAP building now complete

The SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program) building is finally completed and is ready to welcome back its patrons.
On Wednesday, the final items were being moved into the new facility, according to SNAP director Tonya Challis. She expressed the staff's excitement to finally move into the building.
Operations will resume on Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. — their typical hours of business, with lunch being served at noon. On Friday, SNAP will hold its annual Thanksgiving lunch.
