Lady ‘Stangs stomp Lady Loboes, 53-24

After barely surviving Big Spring in their 4-3A opener and giving up a fourth-quarter lead against Midland Greenwood, the Sweetwater girls basketball team needed a statement win here Friday to regain their footing in the district race.
And that’s what they got in a dominating 53-24 win over Monahans that kept the Lady Mustangs (2-1 district, 16-10) within striking distance of the 4-3A lead held by both Wylie and Greenwood, who are 3-0.
“The girls were very determined tonight,” said Sweetwater coach Al Miller. “They were determined to take care of business.”

Highland girls alone in 1st in 13-A after big win

After another easy win on Friday, Highland’s girls now find themselves looking down on all five of their basketball rivals in District 13-A, Division II.
Twelve different players scored for Highland in a 70-26 rout of Loraine as the Lady Hornets im-proved to 20-3 overall and 3-0 in district play.

Sub-varsity hoops

In sub-varsity basketball action here Friday, Sweet-water’s girls won both of their games against Mona-hans while the Sweetwater boys both fell short.
The junior varsity girls are now a perfect 17-0 for the season, and 3-0 in district, as they won 54-34.
Bianca Castillo and Cierra Knox each scored 10 points while Abby McPherson had nine, Shaneese Brown eight, Maddie Jones seven, Jaya Atkins and Jasmine Reddic three and Lexi Castillo and Nisha Williams two.
The freshman girls are now 9-5 overall and 2-1 in district after winning 33-15.

Grilling for 15 years

Today it has been 15 years since Irene Martinez took ownership of Dairyland in Sweetwater.
She took over the restaurant on Jan. 13, 1998, after working there for about six months. "I was the main cook at the time and I bought the restaurant from L.H. Howard. The person who was running the place did not want it any more and Mr. Howard let me take over payments for the restaurant and I've been here ever since."

SPD investigates home invasions

The Sweetwater Police Department on Monday evening responded to the 800 block of Circle Drive regarding a complaint of a home invasion.
According to Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda, the victim stated that multiple suspects entered the residence demanding money. The suspects left with an undisclosed amount of money, along with multiple cell phones.
The victim was unable to provide physical descriptions of the suspects.
The investigation in this case in ongoing.

PTC extension benefits local wind industries

The "fiscal cliff" and its last-minute agreement obviously affect the national landscape, but it also played a large role on the local front, as the Production Tax Credit (PTC)--which deals with the wind energy industry--was extended in the package.
According to AWEA (American Wind Energy Association), the extension of the PTC will cover all wind projects that will begin construction this year, along with projects beyond 2013 to qualify for the credit.
To develop a wind farm, it takes around 18 to 24 months. Also included was bonus depreciation, all of which will assist the industry.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 44 calls for service, issued no citations and made three arrests on Jan. 10, 2013.

The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 100 block of S. Hopkins Road.

• 1300 block of W. 8th.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 700 block of Pease.
• Duty on striking an unattended vehicle — 1600 block of Grand.
• Cruelty to animals — 100 block of Tonkawa.
• Family violence assault — 900 block of Lamar.
• Theft — 1100 block of E. Broadway.
• Information report — 1600 block of San Carlos.

Familiar face joins the team

A familiar face has once again joined the team at the Sweetwater Reporter. Zela Armstrong, who was on the sales team nine years ago, has re-joined the advertising team for the local newspaper. She was hired as an advertising executive by new Publisher Glenn Stifflemire.
Armstrong has lived in Sweetwater since she was in the eighth grade and she and her husband of 27 years, Gary Armstrong, have one daughter, Staci Armstrong of Abilene, who is a Sweetwater High School and Hardin Simmons University graduate.
