Highland girls still No. 1

The Highland girls basketball team is still No. 1 in Class 1A, Division II in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ initial regular-season poll that was released Monday.

Plowgirls rally to win

ROSCOE — A late rally pushed Roscoe past Winters, 31-27, in girls basketball ac-tion Tuesday. The Plowgirls trailed by one until winning the fourth period 12-7.
Roscoe (2-2) led 8-7 after one quarter but Winters led 18-14 at halftime and 20-19 after three periods.
Roscoe was paced by Eva Aguayo with 10 points. Ashton Payne added eight points, Shelby Brown sev-en, Olivia Saddler three, Whitney Williams two and Selena Perez one to the win-ning cause.
Roscoe’s JV girls lost 51-17 to Stamford’s JV.

Free blood glucose testing today at SNCHD

The Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department will be giving free blood glucose tests from 8 a.m. to noon on Thursday at the health department, located at 301 E. 12th Street. Information pamphlets will be available on diabetes. The event is sponsored by the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital Diabetic Outreach Program.

Ribbon cutting today

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting for Rolling Plains RV and Mr. C’s Asphalt Maintenance at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at 9909 1-20 (on south side of I-20 between exits 240 and 242).

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) District Conservationist Mandi Ligon announces applications for funding opportunities with the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP) are currently being accepted at the NRCS offices located at 103 West Florida.

Goodfellows seeks assistance with annual Santa party

The Sweetwater Goodfellows are currently seeking businesses, organizations or individuals interested in setting up a table at the annual Goodfellows Christmas party with Santa.
A total of 10 tables will be set up at the hour-long event and those in charge of the table are asked to bring something for the children to enjoy. "In the past we have had a table with balloons, one with snacks. It does not have to be anything big, just something to give to the children attending the party," says Goodfellows President Billy Johnston. "Some ideas may include coloring books or Santa hats."

SHS, SMS students make honor choirs

Several Sweetwater High School (SHS) and Sweetwater Middle School (SMS) students made the TMEA (Texas Music Educators' Association) South Zone Honor Choir and performed in a concert on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Clyde. Students from SMS include Emma Foust, Megan Dean, Anastasia White, Max Rodriguez, Lauren Browning, Aubrey Delacruz and Taiden Smith, along with SHS student Martin Morini.

GP awards SFD with $5K grant

The Sweetwater Fire Department was recently awarded with a grant from Georgia-Pacific.
"Inspired by the efforts of our nation's firefighters — including the many Georgia-Pacific employees serving their communities as volunteer firefighters — we have tapped into the inspirational history of firefighting to create the Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigade™," said Georgia-Pacific officials.
