Robert G. Allred

November 13, 2013

Robert G. Allred, 82, of Seattle, Washington, passed away peacefully on Nov. 12, 2013 at Clare Bridge in Everett, Washington.
Bob was born April 19, 1931 to Samuel and Vera Orbie Allred (Wood) in Sweetwater, Texas. He attended Sweetwater schools and graduated from Newman High in the class of 1949. He married Betty J. Long of  Roby on April 23, 1955, in Kansas City, Missouri and together they raised three sons.

Walter "Fred" Wilson

Funeral services for Walter "Fred" Wilson, 84, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kary Frye officiating. His body will be cremated under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Wilson died Monday, Nov. 11, 2013 in Sweetwater. He was born April 6, 1929 in Mayetta, Kan. He married Anne Williams on July 29, 1995 in Denver, Colo.

SW drops close one

The Sweetwater girls bas-ketball team stayed close, but couldn’t quite get over the hump in a 43-42 loss to Wichita Falls Hirschi here on Tuesday.
The Lady Mustangs (1-2) led only once in the second half, but pulled within a point twice in the final minute — first on a 3-pointer by Hayley Brownlow that made it 41-40 with 33.8 seconds left, and then on a putback by Cierra Knox with 8.2 remaining after Hirschi had made two free throws at the other end.
Hirschi called timeout with 5.7 seconds left, and was able to break Sweetwater’s fullc0urt press and hang on for the one-point win.

SMS splits final games against Wylie

Sweetwater went 2-for-4 in season-ending middle school football games last Thursday against Wylie, getting victories from both of its Red teams.

The teams battled back and forth until Sweetwater’s seventh grade Red team took the lead in the fourth quarter and made a defensive stop to seal the win. Carson Brownlow had three touchdowns on runs of 20, 5 and 10 yards; Andrew Medina had a 45-yard interception return for a TD; and Medina and Alex Gallegos had two-point runs.

Freshman girls win; JV girls fall

The Sweetwater freshman girls basketball team, paced by Lauren Jones’ 18 points, beat Wichita Falls Hirschi’s freshman girls 28-16 here on Tuesday as they ran their early season record to 2-0.
Sweetwater led all the way, going up 10-6 after one quarter and extending its lead to 16-9 at halftime. The Lady Mustangs led 24-14 going into the fourth quarter.
Jennifer Medellin (four) and Sonya Sanchez, Davina Walker and Kaitlyn Foster (two each) also scored.

SMS teams top B-Spring

The Sweetwater eighth grade Red girls edged Big Spring 43-42 in two over-times, while the Sweetwater seventh grade White girls defeated Big Spring 30-8 in season-opening basketball action on Monday.
Texas Williams had 20 points and Sonora Medellin 17 for Sweetwater Red. Williams also grabbed eight rebounds, while Eva Orne-las had five and Jessica Poe four. Angela Blueford scored three points and Lati Burnett, Sierra Martinez and Jaelynn Page one.

Highland JH girls win their opener

The Highland junior high girls basketball team defea-ted Westbrook, 22-19, in its season opener on Monday.
Karlie Allen led Highland’s win with nine points. Also scoring for the Lady Hornets in the game were Madison Rowan with six points, Reann Robinson with five points and Shelby Harris with two points.

US 84/I-20 overpass closed for repairs

NOLAN COUNTY – The US 84 overpass at Interstate 20 in Nolan County is currently closed for repairs. The overpass is expected to reopen by Tuesday, Nov. 26. During this time, traffic should follow the posted detour.

Diabetic Outreach Program to offer blood sugar checks

November is American Diabetes Month, and to acknowledge this the Diabetic Outreach Program at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the health department on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 8 a.m. until noon to do free check blood glucose and answer any questions you may have regarding diabetes. Pamphlets and materials will be available.
The health department will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29 for the Thanksgiving holidays. Immunization clinic is cancelled for Wednesday, Nov. 27. Regular hours for immunizations will resume on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
