Susan King hosts town hall meeting

November 12, 2013

State Representative Susan L. King held a town hall meeting in Roscoe on Friday. She briefly discussed the upcoming 2014 interim studies and touched on the big topics from the last legislative session: water, transportation, education and health care.
Roscoe residents, including Roscoe Mayor Pete Porter, City Manager Cody Thompson, Nolan County VCSO Robert McBride, RVFD Chief Gary Armstrong and Travis Williams of Blackland Smokehouse, voiced their opinions and concerns on several issues, mainly healthcare and education.

Livestock and pasture health workshop this week

The Southern Rolling Plains Range Workshop on livestock and pasture health will take place in Sweetwater this week. The event will take place on Thursday at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex. Registration will be from 8-9 a.m.
The following is a schedule for the event:
• How Grass Really Grows (Range Management Considerations) — Dr. Ron Sosebee;
• Rainfall Recharge — Dr. Alyson McDonald, AgriLife Extension Service;
• Brush Control Update – Dr. Charlie Hart, Dow;

Veterans honored at Nolan Nursing

Nolan Nursing and Rehab in Sweetwater honored their Veterans with an awards plaque ceremony.
Patriotic music and a special reading of original Veterans Day poetry was recited by Lenore Rakes.

Weekend hoops

November 12, 2013

The Sweetwater varsity girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season by beating San Angelo Lake View 51-48 here Saturday.
Cierra Knox had 13 points and Shaneese Brown 12 to pace Sweetwater, which led Lake View 41-30 after three periods before holding on for the victory. The Lady Mustangs led by five, 27-22 at halftime. Also scoring for Sweetwater (1-1 this season) were Taylor McPherson with eight, Hayley Brownlow and Kayla Chowning with five, Bianca Castillo with four and Maddie Jones and Abby McPherson with two.

State Farm office to host free seminars Tuesday and Thursday

Doug Sitter State Farm, located at 208 Lamar Street in Sweetwater, will be hosting two free seminars this week. "With so many changes right now in health care we wanted to offer some information on what the future holds and how we can help," said Doug Sitter, State Farm agent.

Flag raising at VFW

November 11, 2013

The Sweetwater VFW Post 2479 Nolan County Honor Guard hosted its annual Veterans’ Day flag-raising ceremonies honoring all veterans on Monday morning.
Coffee and donuts were served starting at 6:15 a.m. and the flag raising took place at 6:30 a.m. Judge Tim Fambrough was the guest speaker.

Local Veteran assists family of lost shipmate

On this Veterans' Day, we take time to remember all the men and women who serve and continue to serve our nation in the name of freedom. While their bond is strong during combat, the unity remains years later, as one local veteran proved that to assist one family in learning the full story of a family member lost during World War II.

WASP Museum hosts 5K run

The WASP Museum (Women’s Air Service Pilots) hosted runners of all ages Saturday afternoon for their annual Run for the WASP. The WASP run is an annul fundraiser benefitting the museum and honoring the women who served as WASPs.
Men and women competed in a 5K run, while others could walk a mile to show support.
