East Ridge Elementary School third grade teacher, Jimmy Bennett, was voted by his peers in Region 14 as the 2013 Elementary Teacher of the Year.
He, his wife Lesley and the principal of the school, Vicki Mayberry were recently in Austin for the awards ceremonies. Commissioner of Education Michael L. Williams spoke at the ceremony and presented Mr. Bennett this prestigious award.
Military graveside services for Robert Leon Haines, 90, of Sweetwater will be held at noon on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013 at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colo. with Chaplain Charles Keogh officiating.
Visitation will be held all day Tuesday, Oct. 29, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Haines died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
He was born Jan. 7, 1923 in Millard, NE. He married Ruth Pauline Schuster in Washington State. She preceded him in death in 1990.
Haines lived in Sweetwater the past 20 years. He was a self employed home builder.
ROTAN âÂ Jose âJoeâ Benigno Almanza, 73, passed away Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013 at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.Â
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013 at Belvieu Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.Â Â

Carolee Patterson passed away on Oct. 26, 2013 at the age of 72 years old.

In the event of an emergency, the Sweetwater Nolan County Health Department is responsible for providing mass vaccinations and medications (both oral and injectable) to the entire population of both Nolan and Fisher Counties. Whether it is a bioterrorist attack or a natural occurring pandemic, the health department must be prepared to medicate or inoculate all residents within 36 hours. Ongoing planning and practice is essential and required in order to protect the community in the event of a disaster.
The cold season is approaching. Warm the hearts and hands of children by donating new or gently used coats and gloves. Since 2004, Bahlman Cleaners has collected over 1,000 gently worn winter garments for men, women and children who otherwise would be without one, according to owner Janice Pridemore. Bahlman's mission is simple: anyone in the region in need of a coats shall receive one if possible.
Broadway Baptist Church will be holding their annual fall event, Treatsville, on Thursday night, Oct. 31 from 6-8 p.m. at the Family Center. The church is located at 710 E. Third in Sweetwater.
Treatsville provides families throughout the community with a fun yet safe event to attend on Halloween night. A "trunk or treat" line will be stationed in the parking lot, along with a face painting booth by Gospel Ministries to Children from San Angelo.
Andrea Croan has been promoted to Circulation Manager at the Sweetwater Reporter. Croan first joined the Sweetwater Reporter's circulation department in March 2013, just after the Rattlesnake Round-Up, and has been a welcome addition to the newspaper family. Born and raised in Sweetwater, Croan lives here with her four children â Racheal, 16; Dylan, 15; Katelyn, 8; and William, 2.
Graveside services for Bonnie Belle Holt Alexander, 91, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 28, 2013 at Garden of Memories Cemetery. Mike Ensminger will officiate and interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Alexander died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.
She was born March 16, 1922 in Breckendrige. Bonnie married J.W. Alexander on Oct. 5, 1940 in Sweetwater.
