On Friday, Sweetwater and Wylie met for the 12th â and from all indications, the last, at least for the forseeable future â time in a district football game.
Once again, it was a game with major district and play-off implications for both of the teams. And as so often been the case, it was the season finale for both the Mustangs and Bulldogs.
However, for a long time, something totally different for the rivalry â a Sweetwater win â seemed eminently possible.
Sweetwaterâs sub-varsity football teams ended their seasons by losing games at Wylie on Thursday.
Sweetwaterâs JV finished 2-3 in district and 6-4 over-all after losing 49-12, while the freshman team wound up 0-5 in district and 3-6 overall after losing 47-0.
Max Gomez had a 16-yard touchdown pass to Michael Green as well as a 4-yard TD run for the JV team, while Denzell Moore on of-fense and Branson Guelker and Hunter Mobley on de-fense were also standouts.
Blackwell head football coach Clint Lowry has an-nounced that the Hornets will take on Lueders-Avoca in a Six-Man Division II bi-district playoff game Friday at Westbrook.
The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. and Blackwell will be considered the home team.
Blackwell was the champion of District 8, Division II after beating Robert Lee last week. Lueders-Avoca (7-3) finished as the runner-up to Loraine in District 7, Division II.
Blackwell is making its second straight playoff ap-pearance. It lost to Loraine in bi-district last season.
ROBY â Roscoeâs bid to seize the No. 3 and final playoff spot from Roby in District 7-1A, Division II was met with stiff resistance Friday on the Lionsâ home field â and weâre not talk-ing about the wind, either.
Roby, which led both Roscoe and Cross Plains by a game for the No. 3 spot coming in, nailed down its playoff berth with a con-vincing 40-14 victory.
