Singer songwriter clinic to take place at Texas Theatre

October 31, 2013

Susan Herndon, along with friends Bob Livingston and Bradley Kopp, will be hosting a singer songwriter clinic at the Texas Theatre on Saturday, Nov. 2. Herndon is an Oklahoma girl and a woman of the world. While the patina of Sooner State red dirt is apparent in everything she sings, her music is more about where she's been than from where she hails. A degree in French led her to south France for many years where her musical odyssey began. "Music really is our universal language," says Susan, "and I do believe that good songs, in any language, can truly touch souls."

Hospital discusses more renovations

October 31, 2013

During Monday night's meeting of the Nolan County Hospital District's board of directors, approval was given toward the reimbursement resolution from McKinstry. The meeting was held at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH).
Should the board move forward with Phase 4 of the hospital renovations — which includes, but is not limited to, work on the surgery, intensive care and obstetrics departments, the resolution allows the board to add the costs on planning with the bond issue. This cost of this tentative project is expected to not exceed $17 million.

SW seeks win at Monahans

October 31, 2013

Sweetwater will make the three-hour trip to Monahans on Friday seeking a win — a win that would not only greatly improve its chances of making the postseason, but also be a huge boost to the football program.
The Mustangs (1-2 district, 3-5) will face a Loboes team that sits atop the 4-3A race with a perfect 3-o mark — but needed a big fourth-quarter rally to win 35-34 over Snyder last week.
Snyder, which fell to 1-2 in district, held a 34-21 lead with 7:41 to play after a 100-yard interception return.

Highland tests win streak vs. top-ranked Ira

October 31, 2013

Talk about a tough as-signment. Highland takes on the state’s No. 1-ranked team in Six-Man Division I tonight at 7:30 p.m.
But Ira (8-0) isn’t the only team in Highland’s district with a long winning streak. The Hornets (5-3) have won five straight since an inaus-picious 0-3 start. In that time, Highland has defeated Sands, Trent, Lueders-Avoca, Blackwell and Rotan and risen to No. 16 in D-I. The Hornets need only one win in their last two games to make the Six-Man playoffs, which would end a postseason drought dating to 2009 when Highland advanced to the state finals in Division II.

Blackwell will face Rob. Lee for district title

October 31, 2013

Blackwell’s football team has something in common with the government. Both have been experienced a recent shutdown.
Blackwell (6-1) has been idle the past two weeks after losing its final non-district game, 76-60, to Highland on Oct. 11.
At the time, the Hornets thought their six-game win-ning streak was the only thing ending. But in addition to a scheduled open date Oct. 18, they discovered two of the other three teams in their district (8 Six-Man) — Lohn and Panther Creek — had cancelled the rest of their season and all three of their district games, due to a lack of players.

Roscoe to host 7-1A co-leader Hamlin

October 31, 2013

With a 4-4 record, Roscoe has already doubled its win total from last season.
But an even bigger goal — making the playoffs — is still in sight for coach Jake Freeman’s team. And right now, the Plowboys are on a two-game roll with wins over Ranger (46-36) and Gorman (71-8) that have put them in a three-way tie for third place with Cross Plains and Roby. All three are 3-2 in District 7-1A, Div. II with two games left.

Lady ‘Stangs down Snyder to earn berth in postseason

October 31, 2013

Sweetwater was prepared to wrap up a playoff berth by defeating Snyder here Tuesday in its final volley-ball match of the season. But a funny thing happened — the officials failed to show up and the teams’ match was rescheduled for Wed-nesday at Mustang Gym.
Fortunately, the delay didn’t seem to hurt Sweet-water. Except for a meltdown in Game 3, the Lady Mustangs dominated the Lady Tigers as they won in four games by scores of 25-16, 25-14, 19-25 and 25-10. The win ended a five-year postseason drought for Sweetwater, which is back in the playoffs for the first time since 2008.
