Sweetwater varsity teams play at Anson tournament through Saturday, Dec. 28.
Roscoe varsity teams play at Eula tournament through Saturday, Dec. 28.
Highland varsity teams play at Grady tournament through Saturday, Dec. 28.
A total of nine players from Blackwell and Highland have garnered either all-state or all-region football recognition from the Texas Six-Man Coaches Association in Region II.
Three Blackwell players got all-state recogni-tion. Quarterback Matthew Lowry made the TSMCA first team, while Jayden Jones was named to the second team at linebacker. Jones also received all-state honorable mention at run-ning back for the second straight year, and kicker Wade Allen also received all-state honorable mention from the TSMCA.
Two of the boys basketball teams â€” from Sweetwater Middle School came away with championships on Dec. 14 at a one-day tournament played in Breckenridge.
The eighth grade Red had wins over Mineral Wells (31-13), Snyder (27-22) and finally Breckenridge (42-32) in the title game.
Against Mineral Wells, Kobe Clark led the way with 10 points while Isak Alvar-ez and Kiante McCoy had seven, Chris Thompson five and Jacob Trevino and Reg-gie Walker one.
Both of Roscoeâ€™s junior high boys basketball teams will finish 2013 undefeated after wins over Hermleigh this past Monday that leaves them with 6-0 records.
Roscoe â€˜Aâ€™ won its contest, 35-13, with Hermleigh despite a scoreless second half. Jose Ortega and Tait Fullwood led the win with 12 points each. Also scoring were Francisco Garcia with three points and Parker Payne, Paul Pantoja, John Castillo and Camden Boren with two. Roscoe â€˜Bâ€™ also won, 28-15. Nicholas Limones and Mas-on Hernandez had eight points, Andrew Deleon four and Will Thomas, Aaron Thomas, Ty Fullwood and Jr Guia with two.
What kind of success are companies enjoying in drilling in the Cline Shale? Is the play moving east toward Sweetwater? When will the region experience the anticipated boom from the Cline Shale?
The answers to those questions are not as easily attainable as one might expect. First of all, one must realize that most of the drilling activity on the eastern shelf of the Permian Basin has nothing to do with the Cline Shale.

Chase Sims was one of three students surprised with special awards during Hardin-Simmons Universityâ€™s Dec. 14, 2013, graduation ceremonies.
For outstanding scholarship and service to the university, Sims was awarded the Winnie and D.M. Wiggins Medal. The honor is bestowed at the close of the winter semester each year for academic excellence throughout his or her entire college career. The recipient must have also spent three or more years in residence; and excel in character, personal development, and academic achievement.
