Sweetwater CC team completes season

The Sweetwater High School cross country team completed its season this past week at the district meet in Snyder.
Big Spring won first place in both the boys and girls team competition while Sweetwater’s boys and girls were fifth. The top three teams and 10 individuals advance to regional competition in Lubbock.
Individual times for SHS runners and their overall finishes were as follows:
BOYS
Brandon Gutierrez 19th (18:04.87); Brynn Torres 25th (19:16.80); Colton Scott 27th (19:37.79); Mich-ael Garcia 31st (21:06.36); Gabriel Salazar 32nd (22:03.77).
GIRLS

Roscoe cross country regional qualifiers

Pictured are Roscoe Collegiate High School’s cross country runners who qualified for the regional meet that will be held this Saturday, Nov. 2 in Grand Prairie. From left are Whitney Williams, Alyssa Chavez, Karina Cisneros, Braiden Moore, Samantha Ortega, Lyndi Wilkinson, Alejandra Solis and Olivia Saddler.
Roscoe’s girls team was district champion and had three of the top six individual runners — Wilkinson, who was second (13:08); Cisneros, who was third (13:14); and Solis, who was sixth (13:30). Moore was fourth in the boys race.

Round-Up for Rehab approaches

The Sweetwater Round-Up for Rehab event is a fun opportunity to once again to help out patients at the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, some of whom are from this area. It’s the annual Round-Up for Rehab in Sweetwater that raises much-needed funds for the REHAB Center. The Shrimp Peel dinner and auction will be held at the Sweetwater Country Club, on Tuesday evening, Oct. 29.
Last year’s event raised a record $62,260.

Highland Heights UMC donates to Gateway Family Services

Highland Heights United Methodist Church recently consecrated and delivered a collection of 52 pieces of luggage and bags, 90 rolls of toilet tissue, 20 rolls of paper towels, paper plates and cups, facial tissue, dishwashing detergent, toilet bowl cleaner, bars of soap, tooth brushes, wash cloths and bath towels to Gateway Family Services.
Gateway ministers to individuals involved in family violence and sexual assault in five counties, Scurry, Nolan, Mitchell, Fisher and Kent.

Ingrid Floer Bakken Griggs, 94, of Sweetwater, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, in Sweetwater.
She will be cremated. No further services are planned at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

Jackie Lee Hill

Jackie Lee Hill, retired ironworker and pipefitter passed away at his home in Glen Rose on Tuesday, Oct. 22. He was 70 years old. Jackie was born to Modena Munsell and Oscar Lee Hill on Aug. 19, 1943 in Coleman, Texas. He attended Sweetwater High School from 1956-1960.
Jackie was preceded in death by his parents and two of his brothers, Jerry and Larry Hill.

Anna Jewell Rice

Anna Jewell Rice, age 91, passed away Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013 at McCoy Chapel of Memories with the Reverend Jerry Payne officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
