Roscoe rallies to beat Ranger

RANGER — Roscoe did not take a lead in its District 7-1A, Div. II game at Ranger until the third quarter on Friday, but still came away with a badly-needed win as the Plowboys prevailed by a 46-36 count.
Roscoe (3-4 overall) im-proved its district record to 2-2 and got several outstanding offensive perfor-mances. Cutter Davila, the team’s quarterback, threw for 287 yards and five TDs on 14-of-25 passing.
His favorite target, once again, was Shelton Toliver, who caught six passes for 104 yards with four scores.

Blackwell to play one district game after two other opponents forfeit

Blackwell’s varsity football team will play only one of the three other teams in its district after forfeits by Lohn and Panther Creek, the school has announced.
Blackwell plays Robert Lee on Nov. 1 in its only district game, originally scheduled for Oct. 25.

SW gets key road win

GREENWOOD — The Sweetwater volleyball team helped its playoff chances on Friday by winning its District 4-3A match at Mid-land Greenwood in four highly-competitive games.
The Lady Mustangs (3-4 in district, 12-19) outlasted Greenwood 27-25, 26-24, 26-28, 25-18.
Sweetwater, which has three games remaining in the season, solidified its bid for the No. 4 and final district playoff berth and got help from Big Spring, which beat Snyder (1-6) on Friday. Greenwood is last at 0-7.

Hamlin mayor to Run for State Representative

Hamlin Mayor Isaac Castro has announced his candidacy for State Representative for District 71. The district encompasses Taylor, Nolan and Jones Counties. Mayor Castro is a Republican and will run against incumbent Susan King of Abilene in the March 4, 2013 primary.

SEED hosts Texas A&M students

SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) recently hosted students from Texas A&M University on a "Landscape of Energy" tour. This was the third year for SEED to host the event, according to Kirstin Smith, the Marketing/Admin. Director for SEED.
All of the students--although from different backgrounds--are enrolled in a "Geography of Energy" course at the A&M campus. The information gathered from the tour will be used for a major writing assignment for the class, which is taught by professor Christian Brannstrom.

Sweetwater Goodfellow Sign-Up approaches

The Nolan County sign-ups for Sweetwater Goodfellows will be Oct. 30, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m. each day at the Sweetwater Fire Station, located at 900 E. Broadway.
Applicants need to bring their latest proof of income which may include approval notice for food stamps, a pay stub or approval notice for TANF, as well as a birth certificate for each child.

Avondale Baptist, Hoyt House to host Trunk or Treat

Avondale Baptist and Hoyt House will be having their second annual Trunk or Treat on Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 6-8 p.m. at 1405 Hoyt Street and 1700 Hoyt Street.
"Last year we had over 600 children visit our event," said event organizers.
This will be an opportunity for a safe and fun time for the whole family. Have your kids dress up in their favorite costumes and kids will be able to Trunk or Treat and receive candy, prizes, cotton candy, snow cones and popcorn on the Avondale Baptist parking lot.

TSTC students assist City

The TSTC (Texas State Technical College) Student Government recently assisted the City of Sweetwater by painting trash barrels at Newman Park and painting parking rails at the SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program) building.
According to Sweetwater's Public Works Director Russell Jones, painting the rails at SNAP will help in preparing for the opening of the newly built SNAP building.
