A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at Terry's Homemade Ice Cream and Italian Ice on Wednesday morning. Located at 109 Locust Street (the blue building behind the Texas Theater), the shop first opened on Labor Day weekend. Terry's is owned and operated by Terry and Carol Frye of Sweetwater. Karen Peyton is the store manager with Kayla Fite helping out as well. Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce and community members, along with the Future Sweetwater group were in attendance for the ceremony.
At Monday morning's Nolan County commissioners' meeting, approval was given to a software contract to provide a database program for the county and district attorney's offices.
Lisa Peterson, the county attorney, explained that the current software had been purchased in 2000. While the company stopped supporting the software a couple years ago, the county still used the software, but now it is no longer working.
Sweetwater Middle School students enjoy Healthy Munchie Mondays in their nutrition elective class.
Every Monday the campus nurse, Tiffany Rotan and her nutrition class, create a healthy and easy to make after school snack. This past Monday, everyone enjoyed fruit kabobs and a fat free fruit dip.

The Sweetwater Round-Up for Rehab event is a fun opportunity to once again to help out patients at the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, some of whom are from this area. Itâ€™s the annual Round-Up for Rehab in Sweetwater that raises much-needed funds for the REHAB Center. The Shrimp Peel dinner and auction will be held at the Sweetwater Country Club, on Tuesday evening, Oct. 29.
Last yearâ€™s event raised a record $62,260.
Kristine Mirelle will return to Sweetwater for the Sweetest Day Benefit Concert Saturday, Oct. 19. She will be one of three female musicians performing that night, starting at 6 p.m. at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium. Mirelle was one of the first performers to play on the new electronic baby grand piano at the Municipal Auditorium last December.
Music began at the piano for Mirelle, who grew up in Roswell, N.M., and began taking piano lessons when she was just four years old.
The Sweetwater Police Department encourages all residents to use a free online system that will help keep track of valuable -- and invaluable -- personal property. ReportIt is a free, secure online service allowing citizens to record serial numbers and upload images for phones, electronics and other valuables. Should those items ever be stolen, the Sweetwater Police Department says having the information will go a long way in accurately and quickly identifying your property. Discussion was held during Monday's Nolan County Commissioners' meeting on the possibility of having a county credit card for travel purposes.
Zach Wilcox with the Nolan County Extension Office made the presentation to the commissioners. He is currently in the process of booking hotel rooms for stock shows coming up in the first part of 2014, and it has continued to be a challenge to do so without a credit card and through the use of checks in the past.
Kenneth Paul Bewley, age 74, of Sweetwater, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
His body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 at Lamar Street Baptist Church with Rev. Keith Clower and Dusty Lovell officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
