Blackwell and Highland this week recognized top athletes from the past year.
Highlandâs Lora Stewart and Ron Covington were the recipients of the Fighting Hornet award. Also, Hornet awards for the top girls athlete went to Stewart in cross country, Sierra Allen in basketball and Beth Richburg in track; and for the boys, Michael Hyde in football, Covington in basketball and Sheldon Hall in track.
A Lady Mustang Bas-ketball Camp will be held June 3-6 at the middle school gym on 305 Lamar Street. The camp is for students who have completed grades 2-8. Camp sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $35 which in-cludes a T-shirt. Pre-regis-tration is appreciated.
A concession stand will be available. The campâs goal is to improve playersâ skills through instruction in individual skills and fun team competitions.
Expect sunny skies today with a high near 96. Winds will be from the west-northwest around 5 mph, becoming east in the afternoon.
Tonight will be mostly clear with a low around 68 with east-southeastern winds at 5 to 10 mph. After midnight, they will become light and variable.

This is a quick, easy and refreshing salad. In the spring and summer, many grocery store will sell the cactus paddles already âde-spinedâ and cut. If you are more adventurous, go out and forage and collect your own! Select the fresh new growth on the Prickly Pear Cactus and remove using pliers, or tongs. Carefully trim off all the spines by sliding a knife flat across the surface. Search for how-to videos on YouTube.
Ingredients:
1 pound (about 3 cups) cleaned, trimmed, sliced 1/4 cactus paddles (nopales)
4 Roma tomatoes, diced 1/4
1 small red onion, diced 1/4
This year's Leadership Sweetwater participants graduated on Tuesday evening with a dinner and ceremony at Texas State Technical College.
A press conference was held on Tuesday morning at City Hall to announce a new school security system to be implemented within Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District).
A program already in use by local law enforcement known as COPsync, Inc. has offered the local school district the opportunity to implement the COPsync 911 system. Thus, Sweetwater ISD will become the first district in the nation to test and implement the security system.

Prior to the swearing in, the results from the Saturday, May 11 city election were canvassed and approved, while a resolution declaring the official results from the election was approved as well. Approval was also given to adopt the resolution appointing the mayors pro-tem for the city, which is on a quarterly rotation.
The SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors approved the financial participation in a Cline Shale study performed by the University of Texas at San Antonio during their meeting on Monday morning.
Prior to the approval, the board met in a 45-minute executive session held to discuss economic development/real property negotiations/personnel matters. Upon returning from the closed session, approval was given on the item.
Billy Joe Craver, 79, of Sweetwater (formerly of Rotan) passed away on Monday, May 13, 2013 at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.
His request was to have his body donated for medical research. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Ray Browning officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
ROBY â Louise (Harris) Curlee, 86, passed away Monday, May 13, 2013 at an Abilene hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church in Roby with burial to follow at Roby Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
