Funeral services for Joyce Goodnight, 62, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 4, 2013 at Fourth and Elm Church of Christ with Mike Crowley officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Goodnight died Friday, March 1, 2013 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
The Highland girls basketball team's magnificent season came to an end Friday when the Lady Hornets lost to No. 1-ranked Saltillo, 41-19, in the semifinals of the state tournament held in Austin. Highland, with players like Hannah Allen (pictured here in Friday's game), finished the season with a 31-5 record while advancing to the state tournament for the first time in history. The Republican Women of West Texas will meet Tuesday, March 5, 2013. The meeting will be held at the Pioneer City-County Museum at 601 E. Third Street in Sweetwater.
Refreshments will be served at 6 p.m. and the meeting will start at 6:30 p.m.
Sweetwater Chief of Police, Brian Frieda will be the speaker. The public is invited to attend.
An update on the hospital renovations was given as part of the Administrator's report during the Nolan County Hospital District board meeting on Monday night.
David White with McKinstry, the company heading up with projects, was joined by four representatives at the meeting to offer an outlook on the current project of the new doctors' offices, as well as look back on the results from the previous work of the new medical /surgical unit.
For the second year in a row, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) hosted a 24-hour Treadmill Walkathon.
As cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States, RPMH continues to raise awareness of cardiovascular diseases through community events such as the walkathon.
Johnny Cash fans will have the opportunity to relive a Cash performance by way of Bennie Wheels, who will make his way to Sweetwater again. This Johnny Cash tribute artist will put on a show at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium Saturday, March 30, performing many of Cash’s hits. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m.
The Sweetwater Municipal Band will also be part of the musical entertainment.

The Blackwood Quartet will perform this Saturday evening at 6 p.m. at Avondale Baptist Church.
Local resident Gary Gibson (above) will be the opening act prior to the Grammy-award winning group's performance. The church is located at 1405 Hoyt Lane in Sweetwater.

Texas State Technical College West Texas will display the college's new mobile welding lab during Spring Preview this Saturday in Sweetwater. This state-of-the-art tool is a self-contained lab/classroom. The mobile lab was designed and fabricated to allow TSTC West Texas to take welding instruction to remote locations to serve both industry and educational institutions. It is this flexibility that allows the school to customize training to fit the customer’s needs.Â
At Monday's county commissioners' meeting, Nolan County Sheriff David Warren presented the state-mandated 2012 Racial Profiling Report for the Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO), which was formally received by the commissioners.
For the 2012 calendar year, a total of 277 people were stopped by Nolan County Sheriff's Office deputies.
From the total, six contacts led to a search, in which five of those contacts consented to the search. Ten contacts resulted in an arrest, and 189 total tickets were issued.
