The 2013 Southwest Energy Summit kicked off on Wednesday, highlighting the magnitude, innovation and scope of various industries such as oil, natural gas, wind, solar, nuclear and coal.
Following a welcome by Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham, the first speaker of the event was introduced. Ben Shepperd, the president of the Permian Basin Petroleum Association (PBPA) discussed the opportunities and innovations within the oil and natural gas industry.
A retirement party for SGT Robert Clark of the Sweetwater Police Department will take place from 3-5 p.m. on Friday at Fourth and Elm Church of Christ, located at 400 Elm Street.
The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce, Ambassadors and members of the community joined in celebrating Emmanuel Fellowship Church's new Salvage Yard youth facility with a ribbon cutting. An open house was also held for the expanded Sanctuary and renovated children’s wing.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 34 calls for service, issued no citations and made three arrests on Mar. 19, 2013.
The SPD received 25, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had six calls for service, served three civil papers and made four arrests on Mar. 19, 2013.

Funeral services for Jose Lorenzo Garza, Sr., 83, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Trinity Baptist Church with Al Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
Garza died Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
Trent — Frank Lewis Moore, 65, died Sunday, March 17, 2013 in a local hospital. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 22, at Trent United Methodist Church with Reverends Norman Patton and Rex Mauldin officiating, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home.
Hardy Jean Smith, 80, of Hobbs, N.M. passed from this life March 19, 2013, in Hobbs. She was born Sept. 8, 1932, in Corum, Okla. to Andrew and Callie Liles. Jean enjoyed her grandkids and great-grand kids, loved the lake house at Possum Kingdom where she enjoyed fishing and spending time with her family.
Elise Lawrence and Amy Witt recorded top-10 medalist finishes in leading the Sweetwater High School girls golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Lamesa Invitational tournament that was held Monday.
Lawrence (83) tied for fifth place among medalists and Witt (85) was seventh for Sweetwater, which shot a one-day 369 total. Corynn Martin (100), Kala Wofford (101) and Alexis Castillo (111) also played for the Lady Mustangs.
The Sweetwater Reds baseball team recently won a 13-and-under tournament held in Abilene. The team includes, back row from left are Kiante McCoy, Jordan McGee, Chris Thompson, Mason Maxwell, Andrew Melendez; front row, Tristan Longoria, Ky Hoover, Taiden Smith, Kobe Clark and Nicholas Figueroa.
