All-District 7-1A

December 19, 2013

The all-District 7-1A, Division II football team has been released, and Roscoe quarterback Cutter Davila, wide receiver Shelton Toli-ver, defensive end Seb-astian Benivamondez and utility player Jesus Leanos — are all on the first team.
Also, Max Nemir was named as 7-1A’s co-defen-sive newcomer of the year.
Leanos and Rafael Aguayo are on the 7-1A second team at two positions each — Leanos at receiver and cornerback, and Aguayo at both receiver and inside linebacker. Honorable mention was given to defensive tackle Zack Longoria.

Blackwell boys start out district by beating Paint Rock

Blackwell split a District 14-1A basketball doubleheader against Paint Rock on Tuesday.
The boys, who are 7-2 overall, began district with a 68-37 win. Matt Lowry had 25 points to pace the victo-ry. Mason Magness added 14, Jayden Jones 13, Ethan Andrews 12 and Wade Allen four. Blackwell led 24-19 at halftime, then turned it on by outscoring Paint Rock 44-18 in the second half.

Plowboys fall, 44-38

The Roscoe boys basket-ball team lost a 44-38 de-cision to Haskell on Tues-day in Roscoe.
The Plowboys, now 1-7 overall, led 33-32 after three periods — only to fall victim to a Haskell surge in the final quarter. Roscoe’s Jesus Leanos led all scorers as he poured in 20 points.
Roscoe held a 13-10 lead after the first period, and the Plowboys led 25-22 at halftime.
Roscoe also got eight points from Javier Leanos, who is Jesus’ brother, six points from Luis Villa and four points by Kevin Lavalais.

Today will be partly sunny with a high near 73. Winds will be breezy from the south-southwest at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph.
Expect mostly cloudy skies tonight, with a low around 46 and southern winds around 10 to 15 mph. After midnight, winds will shift to the west.

Christmas Municipal Band concert to include several vocalists this year

The Sweetwater Municipal Band invites the community to enjoy a variety of music at their annual Christmas concert Thursday, Dec. 19, starting at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be held at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium.
Concert goers can expect many Christmas favorites from the band, as well as performances from several vocalists and a choir. Larissa Place and Rebekah Chrismer will return to perform solos, and Place will sing a duet with Rex Mayfield, who is also doing a solo. Stephanie Wiele and nine-year-old Kailynn “Bean” Guzman will also sing solos.

East Ridge has door decorating contest

Faculty and staff at East Ridge Elementary School decorated their doors for the Christmas holidays. First place went to Mrs. Barkley’s (third grade) fireplace door.
Second place went to Mrs. Marlett’s and Mrs. DeLoera’s (The Zone) Christmas Good List. Third place went to the cafeteria’s Santa door.
Congratulations to the winners and great job to everyone that participated!

Mustang Bowl to get new seats

During the Superintendent's Report at the Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) Board of Trustees' meeting on Monday night, discussion was held on new seating to be installed at the Mustang Bowl.
Three samples were seen by the board. Each seat is expected to cost an average of $120 and would be installed in sections D, E and F, excluding the first three rows.
The seats are 20 inches, which would allow 18 seats per row. Thus, around 900 chairs would be installed.

Roscoe JV and varsity girls at Anson at 1:30 and 3 p.m., respectively.
Highland JV boys and varsity teams at Throckmorton starting at 3 p.m.
Blackwell varsity girls and boys will host Sterling City starting at 2 p.m.

SW boys now 6-0, but SW, Highland girls fall

The Sweetwater boys are now the only undefeated varsity basketball team left in Nolan County. The Mus-tangs improved to 6-0 this season Tuesday by winning at Colorado City, 44-34.
Sweetwater led 37-15 after three quarters, then held off Colorado City’s late surge as the Wolves trimmed that big lead with a 19-7 finish.
Sweetwater led 8-6 after one period, then outscored Colorado City 14-1 in the second quarter and 15-8 in the third stanza to build its 22-point margin.
Dylan Bennett led Sweet-water with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Rhett Tor-res had 10 points and Kaleb Hoover eight.

Three Mustangs are given APSE all-state mention

Three Sweetwater High School football players — receiver Bray Amos and defensive backs Kaleb Hoover and Isaiah McGee — earned big honors by receiving honorable mention to the Associated Press Sports Editors all-state football team released Tuesday.
All three players received first team all-district honors in 4-3A.
Amos, a 5-7 junior, caught 64 passes for 1,037 yards and 19 touchdowns this past season while Hoover and McGee had 100 and 98 tackles, respectively. Hoover had an interception return and McGee a fumble return for touchdowns.
