George P. Bush speaks at 2013 Shale Show

George P. Bush, son of former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, made a stop in Sweetwater for the Shale Show on Wednesday afternoon. Bush, who is a candidate for Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office, is the founding partner of St. Augustine Partners, LLC, of Fort Worth.
Bush briefly touched on two areas he feels need the most improvement in the state of Texas - education and energy. He explained that, as Texans, we can do a better job in education. "We need to raise our standards," said Bush.

‘Doug Dynasty’ at Chamber Coffee

Doug Sitter State Farm hosted a “Doug Dynasty” themed Chamber Coffee Wednesday morning.
Doug and his wife Brandi, along with his staff, dressed up as Duck Dynasty characters. Halloween themed treats were served and a door prize was given away.

Woman’s Forum, Museum to host Pumpkins on the Porch

The Woman's Forum in conjunction with the Pioneer City-County Museum is sponsoring "A Night at the Museum/Pumpkins on the Porch" on Saturday, Oct. 26, with a pumpkin carving contest, costume contest, cake walk and games with prizes. Games, hot dogs and drinks for children are free.

Fourth Annual BBQ-ing in the Wind Steak Cook Off is this month

The Fourth Annual "BBQ-ing in the Wind" Steak Cook Off will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, in Roscoe during the West Texas Wind Festival. The event is sponsored by Fuller Food in Colorado City.
Events in the cook-off will consist of a 16 ounce rib-eye steak, pork spare ribs and chicken (or half a chicken). Meat inspection will start at 8 a.m., with a cooks' meeting to follow at 10 a.m.
The turn in times will begin at 3 p.m. for the chicken, 4 p.m. for the rib-eye steaks, and 5 p.m. for the ribs. The first place steak will receive a $1,500 prize.

Football Player of the Week

Daven Alvarez is Sweet-water’s Football Player of the Week.
Alvarez, a senior defensive end, was in on 13 tackles, two of them unassisted, in a 35-30 loss to Brownwood this past Friday.

8th grade Red 34, Brownwood 6
Chris Thompson had a hand in all five touchdowns for Sweetwater Red (2-1) when it defeated Brown-wood this past Thursday.

Wylie beats SW in 3 games

Wylie had to struggle to put away Sweetwater here Tuesday before winning the teams’ District 4-3A volleyball match in three games.
That was good news for Sweetwater coach Liz Miller, whose team (0-2, 9-17) lost by scores of 25-15, 25-10 and 25-19 to Wylie (2-0, 21-9) at Mustang Gym.
“I’m proud of my girls. I thought they did great. We competed,” Miller said.
Sweetwater led for much of Game 3, which was tied 13-13 until Wylie scored 12 of the last 18 points to com-plete a three-game sweep.

Shale Show continues today in Sweetwater

The first Shale Show began Tuesday at the Nolan County Coliseum complex in Sweetwater and will continue today with roughly 200 indoor and outdoor oil industry exhibits set-up.
Exhibitors arrived from more than a dozen states and from all energy regions of Texas.
Exhibits include drilling rigs, helicopter ambulance, dozens of heavy vehicles indoors and out, two buildings of indoor trade show booths, high-profile speakers, etc.

Bitty Bop Harvest Bash this Friday

It's time to round up the little ones in the family--the Bitty Bop Harvest Bash is coming up.
For the second year in a row, Cornerstone Christian School will be holding the event this Friday at the 4th and Elm Church of Christ parking lot. All proceeds from the event will benefit the school.
From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., children ages 1 through 8 can take part in fun activities and games specifically geared for their age group. Among the activities will be pumpkin painting, an apple toss, leaf printing, football toss, digging for treasure, a petting zoo, and fall pictures and tattoos.
