SW hosts high-flying Hawks

September 19, 2013

Wall and Sweetwater, who will meet Friday at Mustang Bowl for what will be Sweetwater’s homecoming contest, have a few things in common.
First of all, both have gotten their 2013 seasons off to solid starts.
Wall, which is current-ly ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press high school poll in Class 2A, has posted a flawless 3-0 record so far and the Hawks are coming off their most impressive win, a 35-14 victory over highly-regarded Sonora this past week.

3-0 Hornets finally get to play at home

September 19, 2013

Call them road warriors, but not playing at home hasn’t hurt Blackwell so far.
In their first three games the Hornets have had con-vincing wins at Westbrook (52-0), Jayton (32-14) and Lingleville (88-42), the last foe a late replacement when Rule cancelled a few days before it was scheduled to play against Blackwell.
But despite the last-minute change and having to make a 141-mile road trip to Lingleville, Blackwell was more than up to the chal-lenge as the Hornets racked up 544 total yards, all but 27 of it on the ground.

Highland seeking a breakthrough vs. another rugged foe

September 19, 2013

Highland’s 0-3 start this season is a bit deceiving, as two losses have been by a total of nine points. And it won’t get any easier as the Hornets face 3-0 Sands at home this Friday.
But the games that really count aren’t here yet, and coach Jeff Shelton is still confident in his team.
“One thing the kids in Highland have always been good about is looking at the big picture,” Shelton said.

And it came down to the wire in both Game 4 and Game 5 before Sweetwater won the match by scores of 14-25, 25-21, 13-25, 27-25 and 15-13.
Freshman Kensi Chown-ing had a team-high 10 kills, plus two digs and one ace, for Sweetwater (9-14), which won’t see action until Sept. 24 when it hosts Levelland in the Lady Mustangs’ final non-district match.
