SISD to host junior high UIL meet

The Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) Board of Trustees met for their meeting on Monday night, in which approval was given for an early release day on Wednesday, December 4.
The purpose of the shortened class day is due to the fact that the district will be hosting the junior high UIL (University Interscholastic League) academic meet, as they did last year. This year, Big Spring will be hosting the high school and elementary meets, while Snyder will host the one-act play competition.

Royce Porter to return for Homecoming

Royce Porter will return to Sweetwater this weekend during Homecoming. Porter will attend several events involving the Sweetwater/Newman High School All Class Reunion including an event after the football game on Friday at the Texas Theatre, hosted by Randy and Jolanda Hendricks. He is also expected to attend the 3 p.m. to midnight event at the WASP Museum and is looking for any of his students he taught and invites them to attend with guitar in hand. Porter is also expected to be the Homecoming parade marshal and will be given a key to the city this weekend.

Ellen V. Martin

Ellen V. Martin, age 77, of Sweetwater, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2013 at Hendrick Medical Center.
Her body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Thelma Maye Adkins

September 19, 2013

Thelma Maye Adkins, 87, of Midland, passed away Monday, Sept. 16, 2013.
Maye was born June 17, 1926 in Fisher County, TX to Sarah Edna Ferrell Walker and William Dallas Walker. Maye attended school in Roscoe, TX and also attended Texas Tech College. She taught school in Sylvester, TX. Maye was married to Gerald Adkins on Feb. 18, 1956 in Midland, TX.
Maye was a long time employee of the Midland Reporter Telegram and also worked for the Odessa American.

Enrollment up more than 23 percent at TSTC West Texas

Enrollment at Texas State Technical College West Texas has increased significantly this fall. As of Sept. 17, 2013, there are 1,282 students enrolled at TSTC West Texas. On this same date last year, the college had 1,041 students enrolled.
“Business, industry and the community rely on TSTC to meet the demand of a skilled technical workforce," said TSTC West Texas President Gail Lawrence. "We, at TSTC West Texas, have worked diligently to provide programs that meet the specific needs of the Big Country," added Lawrence.

City issues notice for proper brush and debris disposal

The placing of junk, brush and/or debris in the alley and/or street right of way is littering and subject to a fine not to exceed $200 in addition to refuse surcharges to be applied.

FSA announces acreage reporting dates for 2014

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie announced that producers who file accurate and timely reports for all crops and land uses, including failed acreage can prevent the potential loss of FSA program benefits. Please pay close attention to the acreage reporting dates below, as some dates have changed for 2014.
“In order to comply with FSA program eligibility requirements, all producers are encouraged to visit the Nolan County FSA office to file an accurate crop certification report by the applicable deadline," said Cumbie.

Bishop honored by SISD board

September 18, 2013

A resolution honoring past Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) board trustee Wes Bishop was read during Monday night's school board meeting. Bishop served on the board for a decade, from 2000 to 2010.
He was praised for his commitment to and involvement in local education, along with his extraordinary performance and invaluable contributions to the district. The resolution also proclaimed Sept. 16 as Wes Bishop Day throughout Sweetwater ISD.

Free cholesterol screenings at local health department

September is National Cholesterol Education Month. To observe this, a free cholesterol screening sponsored by Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be held on Thursday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department, located at 301 E. 12th in Sweetwater.
Cholesterol can play a critical role in a person's health. It's important that all people know what their cholesterol level is and how it affects their risk of developing heart disease. People also need to learn about all risk factors for heart disease.
