Roscoe back on road after 1st victory of Freeman era

After a Week Zero loss to De Leon, Roscoe gave new head coach Jake Freeman his first win this past Friday — and in the Plowboys’ home opener — with a 45-26 victory over Irion County.
The victory was “huge” for the program, Freeman said this week.
“Obviously, any win is big but to get rolling like we did on our home turf was big. It was great for the team to experience and to let them realize that they need to go out every week expecting to win.”

Lady Mustangs sweep at home

Playing at home for the first time in over three weeks, Sweetwater High School’s volleyball team swept past Lamesa in three games Tuesday, winning 27-25, 25-12, 25-8.
The sub-varsity squads also won in straight sets as the JV beat Lamesa 25-21, 25-10 and the freshmen won by scores of 25-13, 25-16.

The Sweetwater High School junior varsity volleyball team overcame a slow start to win consolation honors this past weekend at a tournament in Lamesa.
Sweetwater dropped a 15-25, 17-25 decision to Seminole in its first match, but rebounded to win its last three matches.
The Lady Mustangs beat Plainview 16-25, 25-18, 25-22; Lubbock Estacado 25-9, 25-9; and Big Spring 25-22, 25-18.
Freshman volleyball takes 3rd at Lamesa
Sweetwater High School’s freshman volleyball team also played in a tournament at Lamesa over the weekend and placed third.

Girls singles — Jenny Medellin lost 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, (6-10); Teresa Perez-Poe won 6-2, 6-3; Crystal Foust lost 4-6, 6-4 (8-10); Gisela Selano lost 0-6, 0-6; Rebecca Gonzales lost 0-6, 0-6; Naomi Gonzales lost 5-7, 4-6.

Relay For Life only one month away

One month from today, on Saturday, Oct. 12, the 2013 Relay for Life will be held at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.
There are several events to look forward to at this year's Relay, including a Car and Bike Show and the Relay Fun Day. Teams will also be able to enjoy games, activities and food booths.
At 5 p.m. on Relay day, a Survivors' Meal will be held, with the meal donated by Skeet's Texas Grill. All survivors will eat for free.

Infigen Energy makes another donation for 69 Ranch’s Kids On the Land Program

Peggy Maddox, Executive Director of Kids On the Land Program and Katherine Dickson of 69 Ranch, recently visited Michael Jimenez of Infigen Energy to accept a donation to support the Kids On the Land program at the Dickson Family 69 Ranch at Maryneal, Texas.
Infigen Energy, a renewable energy business specialist, operates Sweetwater Wind Farm 4 and 5. The company believes community relationships are very important. They actively support local communities and schools. This donation will support Kids On the Land days in September for Roscoe, Highland and Blackwell fourth and fifth grades.

Reappointments approved at city meeting

During Tuesday's meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission, several reappointments were approved.
Billy Whisenant and Arthur Maberry will continue to serve as SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) board directors, after being the sole nominees for the position by the commissioners. Both men had expressed willingness in continuing to serve, and their three-year terms will start on October 1 this year and run through September 30, 2016.

East Ridge fired up for the new school year

A back-to-school pep rally took place recently at East Ridge Elementary School, getting students fired up for the new year.
The theme of the pep rally was “Marvel Muscles, Marvel Minds” and special guest Spider-Man made an appearance at the event, leading students in a Zumba session. Students are shown spelling “East Ridge” during a cheer at the pep rally.

Wilma Floy Stanley

Funeral services for Wilma Floy Stanley, 86, of Roscoe, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at Roscoe Church of Christ with Dan Boren and Royce Clay officiating. Interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Stanley died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, in Sweetwater. She was born April 4, 1927, in Cole County, Okla. She married Don Stanley on Jan. 18, 1946, in Hawthorne, Calif. Wilma came to Roscoe in 1977 and was a nurse’s aide for many years and was a member of the Roscoe Church of Christ.
