Trailing a team it beat 48-10 last year in the Sammy Baugh Classic, Everman got a 55-yard scoring pass from Reggie Kincade to Chris Stafford with 4:12 left and extra point for a 16-15 victory over El Paso Del Valle at Mustang Bowl on Saturday.
Everman trailed Del Valle 7-3 at halftime and 15-9 in the fourth period before pulling out the win, which was in doubt until defensive end Charles Badger blocked a 45-yard field goal attempt by Del Valle that came with 1:45 remaining.
Joe Banyard’s career with the Minnesota Vikings will continue, just not on the team’s active roster.
Banyard, a former star running back at Sweetwater High School and University of Texas-El Paso, failed to make the Vikings’ 53-man roster when the final cuts were announced Saturday.
However, on Sunday it was announced he had been signed as one of eight members on the practice squad, where he spent the last part of the 2012 season as a member of the Vikings.

EASTLAND — Plenty of fireworks were expected when Sweetwater and Eastland kicked off their respective 2013 football seasons against each other Friday. And the teams didn’t disappoint as their offenses produced almost 1,000 yards as well as 48 first downs — and also no turnovers on a total of 134 plays.
But the Mavericks, who lost to Sweetwater 23-13 a year ago when the teams met at the Sammy Baugh Classic in Shane Mobley’s head coaching debut, turned the tide on the Mustangs as they rallied from a first-half deficit to take a 46-30 victory on their home field.
DE LEON — Roscoe produced a few eye-popping offensive stats against the De Leon Bearcats on Friday in its first game under new head coach Jake Freeman.
Quarterback Cutter Davila completed a whopping 35 of 46 passes for 389 yards and two touchdowns. And his favorite passing target against the Bearcats, Shelton Toliver, caught 16 balls for 130 yards.
But despite their heroics, plus another 100-yard receiving effort by Kevin Lavalais (5 catches for 115 yards and one TD), the Plowboys weren’t able to pull off the victory.
WESTBROOK — It took only one half for Blackwell to defeat Westbrook on Fri-day in its season opener.
Thanks to the 45-point rule, it was over at halftime as Blackwell finished with a convincing 52-0 road win.
The Hornets had 294 total yards on 23 snaps in two quarters of work, as they finished the night with 222 yards rushing and another 72 yards through the air.
