Plowboys take on IC in home opener

September 6, 2013

All three Nolan County area high school football teams face opponents tonight they had little success against in 2012, and only Roscoe plays at home.
The Plowboys — 0-1 after losing to De Leon 34-21 in their opener — entertain Irion County in their home opener at 7:30 p.m. Highland, also 0-1 after losing to Motley County 62-59, travels to Sterling City.
Finally, Blackwell — 1-0 after beat Westbrook 52-0 last week — goes to Jayton.
Those three opponents won last year’s games by an average of nearly 39 points, but things should be better this time around.

Classic begins Saturday with new sponsor, setup

September 5, 2013

The newly-named 2013 Shale Show Sammy Baugh Classic begins this weekend at Mustang Bowl with a new sponsor and — at least for this year — a new and rather unique scheduling setup.
A total of three games will be played this year in the Classic, which is now in its ninth year. But instead of having its traditional Thursday through Saturday lineup, all games at the 2013 event will be played on the weekend — starting with the opening game at 11 a.m. Saturday between Quanah and Miles.
For the first time, the Classic is on two weekends.

Blaze burns 25 acres

September 5, 2013

Area fire crews battled a blaze just west of Lake Trammell on Wednesday when a fire began around 11:45 a.m.
According to firefighters, the dry conditions and rugged terrain made the fire very difficult to reach. The fire was contained at about 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Fire departments that helped to extinguish the blaze include the Sweetwater Fire Department, Roscoe VFD, Lake Sweetwater VFD, Maryneal VFD and Nolan VFD. Nolan County workers and members of the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with the blaze.
The fire was said to be started by a train.

For the budget, a package presented to board members included a line-by-line breakdown by department. The proposed tax rate for the new year is at .25237--an increase from last year’s rate of .22176, but the same rate from the 2012 fiscal year.

Mustangs travel to Andrews

September 5, 2013

After losing on the road to a very good Eastland team in its opener, Sweetwater has another tough road trip this Friday at Andrews.
And after giving up 584 yards in a 46-30 loss to the Josh Moylan-led Mavericks, the Mustangs once again will be faced with the challenge of containing an explosive spread offense led by a talented senior quarterback.
