Brookshire Grocery Company launches Gatorade promotion to aid firefighters

Brookshire’s launched a promotion this week with Gatorade to benefit local firefighters across Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana.
From Aug. 28 – Sept. 24, customers will receive 200 bonus yourpoints for every five 32 oz. bottles of Gatorade purchased in a single transaction in a Brookshire’s store. Consumers are encouraged to then donate Gatorade, which will be given to local fire stations where Brookshire’s Food Stores are located. Donation bins are located in the stores, and all Gatorade will be donated to a local fire station predetermined by the store.

Sweetwater recording artists make Tejano Music Awards ballot

Local recording artists Anjelique and Thoze Guyz announced that they have been nominated for Best New Female, Male and New Group in the 33rd Annual Tejano Music Awards. The Texas Talent Musicians Association (TTMA) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote professional excellence; a better understanding and greater appreciation for Tejano music and to provide a public forum for songwriters, performers and musicians in order to recognize their artistic efforts and achievements through the annual Tejano Music Awards and related events.

City of Sweetwater offices closed for Labor Day

The City of Sweetwater business offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2 for Labor Day. There will be no residential or commercial refuse collection on that day. The commercial collection on Monday will be picked up Tuesday, Sept. 3. The residential collection will run one day behind schedule. The Citizen's drop-off center and Type IV landfill will also be closed on Monday, Sept. 2 and will resume regularly scheduled hours on Tuesday.

SISD to have Early Release Day

Sweetwater ISD has an early dismissal scheduled for Monday, Sept. 2, 2013. Listed are the dismissal times for each campus: 12:15 p.m. for J.P. Cowen & Southeast Elementary, 12:20 p.m. for East Ridge Elementary, 12:50 p.m. for Sweetwater High School, 12:55 p.m. for Sweetwater Intermediate, and 1 p.m. for Sweetwater Middle School. Employees may leave at 1:10 p.m. if all students have left the campus.

Library Closed for Labor Day

The County-City Library will be closed Saturday, Aug. 31 and Monday, Sept. 2 for the Labor Day holiday.

Clothes closet open today

The First United Methodist Clothes Closet will be open Saturday from 9-11 a.m. Enter through the north fellowship door. Clothes are free to anyone in need. They will also accept clean and gently used clothes.

TxDOT prepares for Lamar Street reconstruction project

Sweetwater – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will begin a major project to reconstruct 1.3 miles of Lamar Street (US Highway 70-Business) in Sweetwater the first week of September.
The project will completely rehabilitate Lamar, which is one of the community’s major streets, from Interstate 20 to Avenue B by rebuilding the road base, laying new asphalt and building concrete intersections to improve drainage. The project also includes new sidewalks, curbs, gutters, retaining walls and upgraded signals.

First Assembly of God located at 312 E. Avenue B; pastored by Rev. G. Wayne Kirk wishes to invite you to a revival with Rev. Steve and Elizabeth Skipper, beginning Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013 through Wednesday the 4th. The revival service Sunday morning will begin after Sunday school at 10:45 a.m. with the evening service at 6 p.m. Then each night Monday through Wednesday at 7 p.m.

New pastor welcomed at Lamar Street Baptist Church

Lamar Street Baptist Church is pleased to announce their new pastor, Clay Jacobson.
Clay earned his Bachelor's of Art in History from Texas A&M University and his Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He will begin fulfilling his pastoral duties starting this Sunday, Sept. 1.
Clay is joined by his wife Melissa, their daughter Ella, and a cat named Chewy.
Although Clay is an Aggie, his wife is a fan of Texas Tech, and they both are fans of the Dallas Cowboys. The Jacobson family is moving to Sweetwater from Roscoe.

Dove hunting season begins this Sunday

Dove Hunting season officially kicks off this Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013. The season is open until Oct. 23, 2013, and runs again from Dec. 20, 2013 to Jan. 5, 2014. Nolan County Game Warden Jake Simmering would like to remind all hunters young and old, inexperienced and veteran, to be sure all guidelines and regulations are followed during this hunting season. Hunters can pick up the Outdoor Annual (free of charge) anywhere hunting and fishing licenses are sold — Higginbotham, Wal-Mart and The Medicine Place are places in Sweetwater as well as online at tpwd.state.tx.us.
