(Bill) William Henry Null, Jr., age 81, of Colorado City, (former resident of Sweetwater) passed away on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at Kristi Lee Manor in Colorado City.
His body was cremated. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, with Rev. Clay Jacobson officiating. Burial will follow with the Military Honor Guard. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
AUSTIN â€” In an ongoing effort to improve safety, the Texas Transportation Commission recently approved nearly $424,000 for a project to install additional safety lighting on I-20 at US 84 in Nolan County.
Willis Electric Co., Inc. of Abilene was awarded the project, which will add lighting to about three miles of roadway in the area. Work is expected to begin this spring.
On Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, the Nolan County Sheriffâ€™s Office received a report of a burglary that occurred at a residence located in the 400 block of South Elm Street in Roscoe.
It was reported that sometime between Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at 8 a.m. and Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at 4 p.m., an unknown person(s) used force to enter the residence. Once inside, the suspect(s) took two jewelry boxes containing an assortment of jewelry.
The Sweetwater Fire Department responded to fires in Nolan County on Sunday, which was deemed a red flag warning day. The high winds and dry conditions were the cause of the elevated fire danger.
This photo shows firefighters responding to a fire on Ragland Street in Sweetwater that firefighters believe began with a lit cigarette butt that might have been thrown out of a vehicle traveling on the street. The occupants of the home did not notice the fire or smell the smoke, but a neighbor alerted the family and authorities and everyone in the home was safe.
January is School Board Recognition Month and Sweetwater is joining other districts across the state to thank these community volunteers for their commitment and contributions to our public schools.

Various activity within the Cline Shale region was discussed at Fridayâ€™s quarterly luncheon of the Cline Shale Alliance, held at the Nolan County Coliseum.
Eric Norton with the Roseland Oil and Gas Directory shared that although he saw the activity in North Dakota in 2009--in which projections were off the charts, covered the development in Pennsylvania, and has been involved in the Permian Basin for the past six years, the Cline Shale appears to be much larger.
Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Maria Ellen Saenz, 57, of Roscoe will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Father Charles Okonkwo will officiate and interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
Saenz died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
Howard A. Stevens, 79, of Big Spring, died Monday Jan. 6, 2014 at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Vigil services took place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral Mass took place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with MSGR Bernard L Gully officiating. Burial followed at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

A pair of Sweetwater High School football players were honored on Sunday with All-Big Country Super Team recognition by the Abilene Reporter-News.
Wide receiver Bray Amos was named to the first team, while Daven Alvarez was named to the second team as a defensive lineman.
Amos, a 5-6, 160-pound junior, caught 64 passes for 1,037 yards and 19 touch-downs. He also rushed for 106 yards and three TDs on just 12 carries. Alvarez, a 6-0, 170-pound senior, had 91 tackles (30 solo), six tackles for a loss, four sacks and two pass breakups.
