Monday is last day to register to vote

The March 4 primary election will be here before we know it, but several other deadlines are fast approaching.
At this time, voters can now start requesting a ballot by mail. However, the last day to register to vote is on Monday, Feb. 3.
The first day of early voting will be Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the County Clerk's office, which is located in the Nolan County Courthouse (100 East Third), Suite 108. The last day of early voting will be Friday, Feb. 28.

Sherman Carl Wade

Funeral services for Sherman Carl Wade, 77, of Sweetwater will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Broadway Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at Hopewell Cemetery near Liberty Hill, TX under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Wade died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.

Harold Carey

Harold Carey, age 83, of Sweetwater, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014 at Hendrick Medical Center.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at Garden of Memories with Joshuah Ellis officiating. Burial will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Several enter guilty pleas

Several have recently entered pleas during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings.
Zamadrick Drakkar Walker pleaded true to revoking his probation. He was originally put on probation for burglary of a habitation, a second degree felony. Walker was sentenced to four years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and was ordered to pay a $3,000 fine, $593 in court costs and $1,000 in attorney's fees. He will receive 153 days credit towards his sentence for time already served in jail.

Christal Martin speaks about Affordable Care Act at seminar

The Affordable Care Act is now in full swing and many Nolan County residents are still puzzled as to what this means to them and their families.
Christal Martin with the West Central Texas Council of Governments was the guest speaker at the monthly Lunch and Learn Seminar hosted by Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Open enrollment to buy health insurance ends on March 31, 2014. To buy insurance outside the open enrollment date, individuals must qualify for a special enrollment period due to a life event such as changes in employment, marriage, divorce and child births, among others.

C. Barrett Thomas nominated as president-elect candidate by TYLA

AUSTIN — The Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) has nominated Amber L. James of Odessa and C. Barrett Thomas of Sweetwater as its next president-elect candidates. The winner of an election this spring will serve as TYLA president from June 2015 to June 2016. Results will be announced April 30.
James is a shareholder with the firm of Atkins, Hollmann, Jones, Peacock, Lewis, & Lyon in Odessa, where she maintains a commercial litigation practice. Prior to joining the firm, she practiced civil litigation with Sprott, Rigby, Newsom, Robbins, & Lunceford in Houston.

RPMH phase 4 update given at board meeting

An update on the proposed Phase 4 project at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital was given at the Monday night meeting of the Nolan County Hospital District.
Phase Four would include renovation of the OR, ICU and construction of a new OB department and some additional improvements.

C.A. “Cal” Penn, Jr.

Funeral services for C.A. “Cal” Penn, Jr., 76, of Sweetwater will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at McCoy Chapel of Memories. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood, Texas. Reverend Keith Clifton will officiate and interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at the funeral home.
Penn died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
He was born March 2, 1937, in Brownwood. He married Peggy Reynolds on May 27, 1957, in Brownwood.
