Public comment sought on use of toxic substances to collect nongame wildlife

Sweetwater meeting slated for Jan. 17

AUSTIN – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is proposing an amendment to the Parks and Wildlife Code that would make it illegal to use noxious or toxic substances to disturb or collect nongame wildlife as well as prohibiting the possession of nongame wildlife collected using these substances.
The technique, often used to collect rattlesnakes, is commonly referred to as “gassing.” Persons engaged in structural or agricultural pest control activities would be exempted from the rule.

January artist of the month: Ryan Smith

This month’s featured artist at the County-City Library is Ryan Smith. Using a Nikon D7000 and various lenses — Tokina 11-16mm, Nikon 18-105mm, Nikon 55-200mm and Nikon 80-400mm — Smith is able to capture astonishing nature photos.
“It’s hard to pinpoint exactly, but my interest in photography really stemmed from a general admiration of nature and the outdoors in all facets: weather, wildlife, scenery, insects, etc.,” says Smith. “As a child, I was fascinated with National Geographic and all of their nature photographs.”

County discusses proposed project

The Nolan County Commissioners met for a final time in 2013 on Tuesday morning to discuss and take action on a proposed project to obtain grant funding from TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) for the planning, construction, reconstruction and maintenance of public roads, bridges and culverts in the county damaged by the exploration, development or production of oil or gas.
The project is pursuant to Senate Bill 1747, which was enacted in 2013 by the Texas Legislature in chapters 222 and 256 of the Texas Transportation Code.

Malcolm R. Mulanax

FORT WORTH — Malcolm R. Mulanax, 56, passed away Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous six-year battle with cancer. His strength and humor carried us throughout the fight.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, at Eagle’s View Church in Saginaw. Interment will be at 1 p.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery. on Thursday prior to the funeral. Arrangements are under the direction of Mount Olivet Funeral Home.

Delores Hollon

January 2, 2014

Memorial services for Delores Hollon, 51, of Snyder, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at McCoy Chapel of Memories. Rev. Dewayne Oden will officiate and cremation will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Hollon died Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, in Snyder.
She was born Sept. 26, 196,2 in Sweetwater.
Delores was a loving mother, sister and friend. She loved cars and working on cars. She was a member of Faith Harvest Pentecostal Church.

Cornelio H. DeLaCerda

Services for Cornelio H. DeLaCerda, 83, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014. Rev. Francisco Ortega will officiate and cremation will follow the services under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A Rosary will be recited by Victor Rubio at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
DeLaCerda died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at his residence.
