Dickey’s Barbecue Pit grand opening event begins Thursday in Sweetwater

Jay and Ratna Devdhara’s love for cooking is what attracted them to opening a Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in their hometown of Snyder. On Thursday, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m., the couple will expand their business with a new location in Sweetwater. To celebrate their expansion, they are hosting a three-day grand opening. The first 50 guests receive gift cards worth up to $50.

SRPC awards scholarship

World’s brightest 5K coming to TSTC Saturday

The public is invited to participate in a local Color Dash on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 10:30 a.m. starting and ending at TSTC Sweetwater Campus.
"This fun, family-friendly event is going to be a big difference maker — it's your city's brightest 5k run/walk," said event organizers. "The Color Dash is a fun-filled experience for walkers, runners and people of all ages, shapes and sizes."

Frances “Fran” Alston

Graveside services for Frances “Fran” Alston, 102, of Westminister (Denver), Colo., will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at Garden of Memories Cemetery with Rev. Brian Brownlow officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Alston died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, at her daughter’s residence in Westminister (Denver), Colo.
She was born on Oct. 23, 1911 in Trent. She married M.C. "Red" Alston on June 14, 1931 in Merkel.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sweetwater. She was born in Trent and raised in Merkel.

Lady ‘Stangs go the distance to beat Miles

After a big 25-10 win in Game 1, the Sweetwater volleyball team suddenly ran into trouble in its non-dis-trict match against Miles here Tuesday. But all was well at the end as Sweetwa-ter outlasted the visitors in a five-game thriller, winning 25-10, 23-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12 in a match that took two hours to finish.
Sweetwater (14-8) excee-ded its 2013 win total with the victory, which wasn’t secured until Kensi Chown-ing collected her 23rd kill in Game 5 to end the match

JV volleyball team gets sweep vs. Miles

Sweetwater High School’s JV volleyball team swept past Miles 25-19, 25-21 here Tuesday. Sweetwater did not play a freshman volleyball match on Tuesday.

Events scheduled today at library

September 17, 2014

Two events are scheduled today, September 17 at the County-City Library.
The Adult Literacy/ESL class will meet at 9:30 a.m. Instructors will help you learn to read, improve your reading skills, improve your English skills or help you read to your children.
And at 2 p.m., the library will have a Home School Story Hour. Library staff will have activities for students while parents meet together.
