Dr. Ron Morris has joined Sweetwater Independent School District as the high school principal. He and his wife Tammy, along with their daughter Mary, are in the process of moving to Sweetwater from the Dallas area. Dr. Morris has worked in many positions in different school systems, from teaching kindergarten and sixth grade, starting after school programs and working as assistant principal and then principal. "May main goal is to increase academic achievement," said Dr. Morris.
Several people have recently entered pleas during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings.
Isaiah Zachary Gongora pleaded guilty to indecency with a child by exposure, a third degree felony. He was sentenced to 10 years of community supervision. He was also ordered to pay a $3,000 fine, $782 in court costs and $500 in attorney's fees. He will also have to serve 240 hours of community service.
DMI Wealth Management Solutions will have a Social Security presentation from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, at the Hampton Inn, located at 302 SE Georgia in Sweetwater. The basics of Social Security, maximizing Social Security, advanced claiming strategies and steps one should take if nearing retirement will be covered at the presentation.
A community blood drive will take place in Sweetwater on Wednesday, July 9. The Meek Blood Center bloodmobile will be parked in the First Financial Bank parking lot from noon until 6 p.m.
â€śWe are asking donors to please remember that the need for blood is constant. Even the regular of blood donors get busy in the summer with vacations and other activities and forget to donate blood. Blood donation only takes about an hour, and that hour could give someone else a lifetime,â€ť said Frances Baker, donor recruiter for Meek Blood Center.

The Monsanto Fund has announced the finalists for this yearâ€™s Americaâ€™s Farmers Grow Rural Education grants. From January through March, farmers across the country nominated their local public school districts for the grants. Once nominated, these districts were eligible to submit completed grant applications in April.
Ray S. Gomez, age 52, of Sweetwater, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo.

Holy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Holy Spirit Parish (Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church) with Rev. Charles Okonkwo officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Frederick (Fred) Lloyd Smith, 72, of Abilene were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Joel Tobey officiating.
Smith died Thursday, July 3, 2014 in Abilene.
He was born June 21, 1942 in Sweetwater. He went to New Hope Church and loved watching westerns and cleaning his car.
