FUMC to collect items for clothes closet

Do you have any clothes that you don't wear anymore sitting around in your closet? Do you have older linens, blankets, shoes or pillows that aren't being used anymore?
Would you like to have those things make a difference in the life of someone else?
The youth of First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Sweetwater will be driving around town this Sunday, March 23, from 3-6 p.m. collecting clothes for their church's Clothes Closet. Specific items include shoes, socks, backpacks, linens, pillows, caps and all sizes of clothing.

Gospel Song-Writing Legend on Tour, will perform in Sweetwater

If variety is the spice of life, then Tracy Dartt & his Gospel-singing family group, “The Dartts” are the perfect treat for the appetites of Gospel Music fans. Their smooth blends and heartfelt presentations make them a favorite of folks from the ages of 1 to 100.
The Dartts write all of their own music. Tracy Dartt is the author of the #1 hit Gospel song, “God On The Mountain.”

Amado Rios

Amado Rios, 70, of San Angelo, passed away on March 13, 2014 in San Angelo.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Robert Massie Funeral Home with the Pastor Daniel Olivan of Segunda Iglesia Bautista, officiating. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home.
Amado was born in Colorado City to Domingo and Isidra Rios on Sept. 13, 1943. He married Juanita Perez on Jan. 24, 2004. He worked as a mechanic for all of his adult life. He was involved in his church and played bass for the church band.

SW teams host Big Spring

Sweetwater’s baseball and softball teams will host Big Spring today.
The Lady Mustang softball team (0-2) will try again for its first district win starting at 5 p.m. The baseball team (1-0) — a 7-6, nine-inning winner over Greenwood in its 4-3A opener — hosts Big Spring (0-1) at 7 p.m.

Today will be partly sunny with a high near 85. Winds will be breezy and from the south at 15 to 20 mph.
Expect mostly cloudy skies tonight, with a low around 48 and breezy winds from the northwest at 10 to 20 mph. Winds will shift to the north-northeast after midnight.
On Saturday, we'll see a high near 61 with a low around 38. For Sunday, highs will drop to the upper 40s with a 30% chance of rain and a low around 38.

Dr. Ellen Walthall speaks on cancer awareness and screening

Dr. Ellen Walthall was the speaker at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) lunch and learn seminar this week.
She spoke about early cancer detection and educated attendees on risks and screening schedules.

Sweetwater ISD participating in Champions for Kids SIMPLE Giving program

From March 22 to April 7, community members shopping at Wal-Mart, located at 407 NE Georgia Avenue will have a chance to donate oral care items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.), and breakfast foods (from April 22 to May 5) to students in their district as a part of Champions for Kids' SIMPLE Giving program.

Luncheon to discuss the economics of tourism

Bronte community leaders will host a regional network luncheon sponsored by Texas Midwest Community Network (TMCN) on Tuesday, March 25, at the Bronte Community Center, 116 NE Railroad Street. Community leaders from neighboring communities are invited to attend, enjoy the local cuisine and discuss mutual concerns. The luncheon is held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and cost is $12.50 per person; reservations are requested.

Two local elementary schools honored by Imagine Learning

East Ridge Elementary School has been selected as a World-Class School, the highest distinction in the Imagine Nation customer recognition program. Only 26 schools met the rigorous usage standards required of World-Class Schools for the 2012–2013 school year. "We congratulate you on achieving this high honor through your consistent use of Imagine Learning and welcome you as a citizen of Imagine Nation," said Imagine Nation representatives.
