Weekend weather for Sweetwater

September 5, 2014

Today will be partly sunny with a high near 92. Winds will be from the south at 10 to 15 mph, and we'll also have a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms.
Those rain chance will increase to 30 percent tonight, with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 69. Winds will come from the east at 5 to 10 mph.
For the weekend, we'll start off with a 50% chance of rain, which will gradually increase to 20% by Sunday. Highs will in the mid 80s with lows in the upper 60s/lower 70s. Winds will come from the north and northeast throughout most of the weekend.

New police building on track for 2015 opening

The new facilities being built at Avenue A and Musgrove to house the Sweetwater Police Department will be completed by the target date of early January.
"If you drive by, you can see the progress," said Police Chief Brian Frieda. "The roof has pretty much been completed, along with the exterior walls. By Sept. 12, it may look like it's slowing down, but that's because a lot of the work will be moving inside."

Early voting ends tomorrow

Texas Governor Rick Perry has called a special election for Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014, to fill the unexpired term of Texas State Senate District 28 seat, vacated by Sen. Robert Duncan.
The County Clerk's Office wants to remind voters that the September election is special-called. The regular general election will still be held on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Discarded cigarette causes fire

A fire on the corner of 11th and Oak began in the yard of a residence on the 100 block of 11th Street. The blaze is believed to have been caused by a discarded cigarette.

Malcolm (Mike) Milligan

Malcolm (Mike) Milligan passed away Aug. 20, 2014 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Graveside services were held Aug. 20, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Lela; one daughter, Karen; and three sons, Mike, Rodger and Jackie.

Mustangs packing to play Mules

Sweetwater came gallop-ing out of the gates to start its 2014 football season last week by thumping Lubbock High, 66-35, in one of its prolific offensive outbursts in school history.
That game was played at Sweetwater’s historic Mus-tang Bowl, which is celebra-ting its 75th anniversary this year, so a history-making win — which happened at the 10th annual Sammy Baugh Classic, no less — was perhaps fitting.
