It's that time again to nominate the 2014 Outstanding Young Citizen, Outstanding Female Citizen, Outstanding Male Citizen and Business of the Year.

New church to give 200 backpacks

A new, local congregation is hoping to make an impact in the community as they prepare for their official church launch.
On Sunday, Aug. 17 from 6-7:30 p.m., Bethel Sweetwater will have a back to school backpack/school supply giveaway at Newman Park. Bethel Sweetwater is an extension of Bethel Assembly in Anson.
Two hundred backpacks filled with elementary school supplies will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Also at the event, 500 hot dogs will be given away.

Richard Fergeson State Farm hosts back to school event

Many attended the back to school event at Richard Fergeson State Farm on Monday. Free hot dogs and school supplies were given away and children enjoyed a bounce house.

Commission leaves burn ban in place, will mull medical chopper service contract

A bit more rain is needed before the Nolan County Commissioners Court will agree to lift the burn ban.
The commission voted unanimously to leave the ban — which hasn't been lifted since late May — in place for now.
"We want to see a general rain over most of the county before we lift the ban," said County Court Judge Tim Fambrough.
The commission agreed to revisit the issue at the next regular meeting.
A presentation by Randy Teague of AirMedCare Network focused on bringing more comprehensive coverage to Nolan County and its residents.

Heroes in an SUV — Turtle rescue

Angie Collier and James Villanueva were in the right place at the right time when the two — in a Nolan County Sheriff’s Office SUV — turned their lights on and stopped traffic to help a frightened turtle to safety.
The turtle was crossing Hailey Street and stopped and hid inside its shell before making it to the sidewalk when traffic started to pick up.

Plowboys hope for return to glory

After bottoming out with an 0-10 record in 2011, Roscoe’s proud football program is once again headed in the right direction.
The Plowboys, who prior to that winless season had gone to the playoffs for 13 consecutive years, could be primed for a breakthrough in 2014 after narrowly missing the postseason in head coach Jake Freeman’s inaugural campaign.
Roscoe went 4-6 in 2013, and was in contention for a berth until the team lost to Roby in its season finale.

Lady Mustangs win opener

Sweetwater swept Grape Creek in three games by scores of 25-19, 25-19, 25-13.

Discovery camp starts today

August 12, 2014

Today, August 12, the Pioneer Museum will be having a two-day Pioneering the Past Discover Camp from 10 a.m. to noon.
The theme is “Life’s a Garden, Dig It”. The two-day interactive archaeology camp is open to children in grades 4 through 8.

Great White performs in Sweetwater

Many attended the Nolan County Fair this weekend and enjoyed a concert on Saturday evening performed by Great White.
Shown are members of the band during the performance including Michael Lardie (keys, guitar), Scott Snyder (bass), lead singer Terry Ilous and lead guitarist, Mark Kendall.
Members of the Nolan County Cruisers car club drove members of the band onto the floor of the Nolan County Coliseum for their show, driving them in classic cars.
