Goodfellows toy drive raises over $900

December 2, 2014

Many donated toys, food and money during the annual Sweetwater Goodfellows toy drive on Saturday in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Volunteers gave out free hot dogs, hot chocolate and coffee to those who donated.

Cormier indicted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer

A Nolan County Grand Jury recently indicted 22 people. Six of those indictments were sealed. The following cases were true-billed:
Brandon Joseph Cormier was indicted on two counts — attempted capital murder of a peace officer, a first degree felony enhanced with one prior felony conviction and aggravated assault against a public servant, a first degree felony enhanced with one prior felony conviction.

FFB to host coffee, open house

December 2, 2014

The December Chamber Coffee event will be held at First Financial Bank on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 10 a.m. This year, FFB will also host their annual Open House at this time, beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at noon. Everyone is invited to attend and come and go as they please. Refreshments will be served in the lobby of the bank, located at 201 Elm Street.

New Microtel Inn & Suites completes ‘the topping out’ for Sweetwater’s newest hotel

A milestone in the construction of the new Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham located at 9416 N. Interstate 20 was celebrated as Harmon Construction watched as a truss crane hoisted one of the beams atop the new tower keeping the anticipated Spring opening on schedule.

Jean Henthorne

December 2, 2014

Jean Henthorne, 85, of Leander, passed away on Nov. 21, 2014. She was born on Sept. 22, 1929, in Sweetwater, to A.C. Healer and Mattie Mae Hammonds Healer. She was a member of New Hope First Baptist Church, Cedar Park.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Henthorne, Jr.; and two sons, Robert A. III and Greg.
She is survived by numerous family members and special friends.
Jean was laid to rest next to her husband Robert in Bagdad Cemetery in Leander.

Roscoe players honored

Several Roscoe football players have been honored by earning All-District 6-2A, Division II recognition for their outstanding play.

Smith sworn in as constable

December 1, 2014

Stephen F. Smith II was sworn in as constable Wednesday by 32nd Judicial District Court Judge Glen Harrison. Smith was appointed by the Nolan County Commissioners Court to fill the unexpired term of former constable Will Lenoir, who passed away in September.

Burned train trestle to be rebuilt

December 1, 2014

On August 15, 2014, a grass fire burned down a rail crossing bridge approximately nine miles south of Interstate 20. The Texas Oklahoma Railroad operates on the Shortline tracks that extend from Interstate 20 south to Maryneal.

Rockey Allen Brewer

Rockey Allen Brewer, 64, of Roscoe, died Saturday, Nov. 29. 2014, at his home.
Mr. Brewer was cremated and no services are planned at this time.
