Joint replacement topic of July lunch and learn seminar

When joints begin to cause chronic pain for people due to advanced conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis or other causes, total replacement of the damaged joint may be the solution. To help our community learn more about when it is time to consider joint replacement surgery, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) will be hosting a free lunch and learn seminar on Tuesday, July 29.

SEED executive director to head training session

The monthly meeting of the SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors was held on Tuesday morning, which covered a wide variety of topics.
Ken Becker, the executive director of SEED, has been asked by Texas Tech University to head an economic development training session for city council members and city managers. Becker was praised by Kirstin Smith, SEED's marketing/admin. director, for becoming a knowledgeable source for economic development presentations.

Bessie Mae Stephens

July 24, 2014

Funeral services for Bessie Stephens, 77, of Roby, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at First Baptist Church Roby. Kerry Peacock will officiate and interment will follow at Roby Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, July 25, 2014 at McCoy Funeral Home.
Stephens died Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at her residence.
She was born July 24, 1936 in Sylvester, Texas.

Forrest James Sims

Sims died Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at Abilene Regional Medical Center.

Josephine Arnold

July 24, 2014

Heaven welcomed Josephine Arnold on Sunday, July 20, 2014. She passed away at Odessa Regional Medical Center.
She was born August 8, 1923 in Hamilton, MO to Vera and Lloyd Roberts. She had spent most of her life in Odessa, moving here in 1952. She worked as a bookkeeper for Rhodes Welding & Co. She loved spending time with family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, C. E. Arnold in December 1993.

Weldon Pat Oden

July 24, 2014

Weldon Pat Oden, 71, of Blackwell, passed away suddenly on Sunday, July 20, 2014 doing what he loved to do — fly his airplane. He did not survive when his plane went down over family property outside of Blackwell known to family and friends as ‘The West Place’. The specific crash site was within 20 yards of the location his parents starting their first homestead together on this property during the Great Depression.

Library Staff will lead the parents and children in stories and songs. Call 235-4978 for more information or go to www.sweetwaterlibrary.org.
Also, the Sweetwater Kiwanis Club will be having their annual swim day today at the public pool from 1-6 p.m. The Kiwanis Club will pay the entrance fee for children 4-12 years old and be providing popsicles courtesy of Brookshire’s throughout the day.

Resident begins group to clean up Lake Sweetwater

A benefit concert is set for this Saturday, July 26, from noon to 11:30 p.m. at the Lake Sweetwater Amphitheater for the families of Cassidy Crain and Devin Larue.
Brisket sandwiches, hotdogs and drinks will be sold at the concert and all proceeds will go to the Crain and Larue families. 50/50 tickets will also be sold and donations will be taken throughout the night.
Musical talents for the event will be Angelique and The Sweet City Band, Doug Bailey Band, Joah "Beaver" Henry, Colton Brown, Brandon Bohall Band, Nine Mile Band, Santa Fe and Shane Henry & 4X Band.
