Local activities for Monday

Today, December 15, Richard Fergeson State Farm will host a Night With Santa event from 4:30-6 p.m.
The public is invited to attend and enjoy free hot chocolate and cookies and take a free photo with Santa. Photos will be printed and given to the families.
Mustang Youth Basketball will hold signups at Rolling Plains Hospital’s conference room (located at the front of the hospital) for the 2015 league from 5:30-7:30 p.m. There will be no late registrations this year.

Mustangs show off their hardware

The 2014 Sweetwater Mustangs finished 13-1 and captured district, bi-district, area and regional semifinal trophies before a loss to Celina in the Class 4A, D-II quarterfinals. This year’s players were Jacoby Hunt, Bray Amos, Michael Green, Isaiah McGee, J’Corey Amos, Deshaun Williams, Kaegan Jeffrey, Hunter Mobley, Michael Lawrence, Max Gomez, Jordan McGee, Scott Warner, Mark Lawrence, Denzell Moore, T.C.

Sweetwater 7th grade ‘A’ and ‘B’ boys will host Big Spring at 5 and 6:15 p.m., respectively.
Sweetwater 8th grade ‘B’ and ‘A’ boys will host Big Spring at 5 and 6:15 p.m., respectively.
Sweetwater 7th grade ‘A’ and ‘B’ girls will play at Big Spring at 5 and 6:15 p.m., respectively.
Sweetwater 8th grade ‘B’ and ‘A’ girls will play at Big Spring at 5 and 6:15 p.m., respectively.
Roscoe junior high ‘B’ girls at Clyde, 6:30 p.m.
All other Roscoe junior high teams are open.
Highland junior high teams will play at Loraine starting at 6 p.m.

Youth basketball signups Monday

Mustang Youth Basketball will hold signups for 2015 league play on Monday, Dec. 15 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital’s conference room, which is located in front of the hospital. Children must be in grades 3-6 to be eligible. Please bring the child’s birth certificate and $30 registration fee. There will be no late registrations.

Buck's to expand its bar, Sweetwater nightlife

Popular Sweetwater eatery Buck's Steaks & Bar-B-Que began work this past week on what will be its second major expansion in under two years.
This time, the restaurant — located at 103 SW Georgia Avenue — will be adding on to its bar and dance floor area, which will more than quadruple the establishment's current tap room occupancy.
Since the completion of the first expansion — which added a room that was partitioned off from the restaurant to accommodate drinking patrons — manager Mike Buckner said business has been booming.

Morris wins shopping spree

Mary Morris, a Sweetwater High School student, was the winner of a $500 shopping spree sponsored by the Woman's Forum. Her family recently moved to Sweetwater. He father is the new principal of Sweetwater High School, Dr. Ron Morris and her mother is a teacher at Sweetwater Intermediate School, Tammy Morris. Holding the winning ticket is Lita McEachern, chairperson of the Woman's Forum holiday give away. Municipal Band to host Christmas concert

All are invited to enjoy some Christmas spirit and attend the Sweetwater Municipal Band’s Christmas concert Thursday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Municipal Auditorium.
Band Director Billy Weems said the band and its sub-elements like the Mistletoe Brass will play mostly traditional, upbeat Big Band songs, including “Silver Bells,” “Winter Wonderland,” Let it Snow,” Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” This Christmas,” and “Merry Christmas Darling.

Betty Lou Rose Wortham

December 13, 2014

Betty Lou Rose Wortham, 78, passed away on Dec. 11, 2014, after an extended illness. She had been under the care of Sweetwater Healthcare Center, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital and Hendricks Hospice in Sweetwater. Her family will hold a private service this week, and a public memorial service and celebration of life will be announced in January 2015.

Lois Virginia (Wales) Faver, a long-time resident of Sweetwater, died peacefully the early morning of Dec. 11, in Baytown, TX. She had just celebrated her ninety-first birthday.
