Sept. 13 proclaimed Randy Rodriguez Day

Nolan County came together on Saturday morning for a great celebration to make one little boy's wish come true.
In partnership with the Make a Wish Foundation, a large parade took place at Newman Park for Randy Rodriguez, a six-year-old first grader at Southeast Elementary who was recently diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor and is already under hospice care.

Vernon F. “Marty” Martin (1927-2014)

Vernon F. “Marty” Martin, businessman, entrepreneur and philanthropist dies at 87.

Sweetwater-Nolan County native and Dallas businessman, entrepreneur and philanthropist, V. F. “Marty” Martin passed on to be with the Lord on Sept. 12, 2014 at his home in Dallas, Texas surrounded by family and friends.
Vernon F. “Marty” Martin was born June 10, 1927 in Taylor County, Texas to Mary Alice (Nalley) and Floyd Martin. They moved to their new home in Nolan County – a stock-farm near Sweetwater – in 1935. He was preceded in death by his parents and his much-loved niece, E. Dawn McRae.

Mary Segovia

Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Segovia, 79, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, 2014 at Holy Spirit Parish Church with Father Michael Rodriguez officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
A Rosary was recited by Domingo Castillo at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014 at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
She died on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.

AARP meeting tonight

September 15, 2014

Tonight, September 15, the Nolan County AARP Chapter 2209 will meet at the SNAP building at 6:30 p.m. A business meeting and musical program will be presented.
There will be a covered dish meal of sandwiches, dips and chips, and ice cream. Please come and bring a dish. All interested are welcome.

After a tough road win at Muleshoe a week earler, Sweetwater had to deal with a huge Breckenridge offen-sive line Friday that allowed the Buckaroos to rack up 23 first downs and 244 rush-ing yards, allowing the visi-tors to control the clock for most of the game at Mus-tang Bowl.

Hornets, Plowboys get their first wins

September 15, 2014

Two area teams won for the first time Friday, both wins coming on the road.
Roscoe (1-2) ended its woes with a 14-6 victory over Junction in a non-district game that was played in San Angelo.
Blackwell (1-2) also got its first win as the Hornets de-feated Westbrook 28-20.

Balloons for Randy at Southeast, PARADE TODAY

Randy Rodriguez, a six-year-old first grader at Sweetwater ISD (Southeast Elementary School) was recently diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor and is already under hospice care. Area schools, organizations and individuals gathered many balloons this week to help make a wish come true for Randy — to have a parade with lots of balloons. Every student, staff and faculty member at Southeast Elementary made a link to a chain to give to Randy at his parade, taking place at 10 a.m. on Saturday (TODAY). They also made signs and inflated many balloons for the event.

Today’s 7:30 p.m. match-up between Sweetwater and Snyder won’t affect either team’s playoff chances...
